Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to transform the travel landscape of Western Uttar Pradesh today by flagging off the Meerut Metro and the final sections of the Namo Bharat (RRTS) train. The inauguration at Shatabdi Nagar station marks the completion of India’s first Regional Rapid Transit System corridor, spanning 82 km from Delhi to Meerut.
In a first-of-its-kind global initiative, the Meerut Metro will operate on the same rails as the Namo Bharat trains. While the long-distance RRTS focuses on intercity travel, the Meerut Metro will provide high-speed intra-city connectivity, setting a new benchmark for integrated transit.

Namo Bharat vs. Meerut Metro: The Infrastructure Split
Though they share the same track, the two systems serve different purposes:
-
Namo Bharat (RRTS): Designed for a top speed of 180 kmph, it connects Delhi to Meerut with limited stops at major urban hubs like Ghaziabad and Modinagar.
-
Meerut Metro: Focuses on local travel with an operational speed of 120 kmph. It features 3-coach trains and will cover the entire Meerut stretch in just 30 minutes.
Multi-Modal Hub: Sarai Kale Khan Integration
The highlight of the Delhi end is the commissioning of the Sarai Kale Khan station. This station is now one of India’s most strategic multi-modal hubs, seamlessly linking:
-
Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station (Long-distance trains)
-
Delhi Metro Pink Line (Internal Delhi travel)
-
Veer Haqeeqat Rai ISBT (Interstate buses)
-
Ring Road (Private vehicular traffic)

Environmental & Social Impact: Decongestion
The full operationalization of the corridor is expected to take thousands of private vehicles off the Delhi-Meerut Expressway. By providing a reliable, high-speed alternative, the project aims for a significant reduction in carbon dioxide emissions and a drastic improvement in the “ease of living” for the lakhs of daily commuters between the two cities.
Reality Check
The “120 kmph” speed for the Metro is a record for India. Still, real-world speeds inside Meerut city will be governed by the distance between stations. Therefore, while the train can hit 120 kmph, it may only do so for short bursts between stops. In fact, the true value for commuters isn’t just the speed, but the 30-minute cross-city commute that currently takes over an hour by road.
The Loopholes
The system is hailed as “integrated.” In fact, the primary challenge is the signaling technology required to run two different types of trains (RRTS and Metro) on the same track without delays. Therefore, any technical glitch in the Namo Bharat system could theoretically stall the local Meerut Metro as well. Still, the shared infrastructure loophole saved the government thousands of crores in land acquisition and construction costs, a model likely to be replicated in future corridors like Delhi-Alwar.

What This Means for You
If you live in Meerut or East Delhi, your “commute-to-work” radius has just expanded significantly. First, check the Namo Bharat app for updated fare charts; prices for the full 82 km run are expected to be higher than standard metro fares but cheaper than taxi services. Then, explore the Sarai Kale Khan hub for your next interstate trip; it is now the most efficient gateway to enter or exit Delhi.
Finally, realize that the Meerut Metro is a game-changer for local business. You should expect real estate prices around Shatabdi Nagar and Modipuram to see a surge. Before you head out today, be aware that entry might be restricted due to the high-profile PM visit; regular public services are expected to stabilize by tomorrow morning.
What’s Next
Following the inauguration today, February 22, 2026, the full 82 km corridor will open to the general public. Then, work is expected to accelerate on the Delhi-Alwar and Delhi-Panipat RRTS corridors. Finally, a new phase of urban development “Transit Oriented Development” (TOD) is expected to launch along the Meerut stations, featuring new commercial complexes and housing projects.
