Delhi just had its coldest December day yet. And then the rest of North India decided to follow suit. The maximum temperature in the capital hit 20.1°C yesterday. That is over two notches below what’s normal for this time of year.
The thing is, it’s not just the cold. The fog is making everything impossible. IGI airport is dealing with zero visibility in pockets. And then the airlines started issuing those “check before you leave” alerts again. Or nothing.

The North India Freeze
The IMD isn’t playing around. They put out a red alert for Delhi and parts of UP today. Red means “take action,” and districts are doing exactly that.
-
Bareilly: Schools are shut for kids up to Class 8. This is for three days because the fog is just too thick to navigate.
-
Patna: They haven’t closed yet, but they pushed the start time to 9 AM. No one wants kids out in the 5 AM chill.
-
UP Cities: Prayagraj, Kanpur, and Etawah are under red alerts for severe cold days. Orange for Meerut and Aligarh.

What draws people to the forecast today is the hills. Snow is coming. Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal, and Uttarakhand are looking at snowfall from December 20–23. Srinagar actually crept above freezing for a minute (0.2°C), but it’s just the calm before the ‘Chillai-Kalan’ storm—that brutal 40-day freeze everyone is bracing for. Let’s be real, it’s going to get much worse.
And here’s the kicker. The air is still a disaster. Delhi’s average AQI is hovering around 387. It’s that toxic mix of smog and fog—smog—that makes your eyes sting. Visibility dropped to absolute zero in places like Agra and Bareilly this morning. It’s an ongoing mess on the highways, and the “yellow alert” for fog in Delhi is basically just a warning that you won’t see the car in front of you.
