The Mumbai-Pune Expressway turned into a parking lot Tuesday after a massive Mumbai-Pune Expressway tanker accident paralyzed the state’s most vital artery. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis ordered an immediate inquiry into the incident after the scale of disruption became clear. Now, officials must explain why one overturned vehicle froze transit for nearly a day.

Propylene Tanker Flip Triggers 21-Hour Gridlock
The chaos began at 5:06 pm on Tuesday near Khopoli. According to the FIR, a tanker carrying 21 tonnes of propylene gas from Cochin to Surat lost control and overturned. Police say the driver, Ratan Singh, was driving at a dangerous speed. Then, the impact cracked the tanker’s valves in multiple places. This damage made the site a ticking time bomb.
Meanwhile, traffic toward Pune backed up past the Khalapur toll plaza. On the Mumbai-bound side, queues stretched over 12 kilometers. In fact, over one lakh vehicles use this route daily. Most drivers remained stuck for hours without any movement.
Official Response and Technical Containment Hurdles
Emergency teams rushed to the spot shortly after the alert. These included the NDRF, fire brigades, and chemical experts from Bharat Petroleum. Still, high internal gas pressure delayed the containment process. Officials had to wait for pressure to drop from 8 psig to 2 psig.
Next, fire crews sprayed water continuously to prevent ignition. They also created a 500-meter “no man’s land” around the wreck. Finally, teams refilled the gas into a secondary tanker. Highway Police Superintendent Tanaji Chikhale confirmed that traffic normalization would take significant time.

The Human Cost of Expressway Paralysis
For families on the road, the delay became a nightmare. Pune resident Rohit More remained stuck overnight with two infants. He noted there were no toilets or safe places to step out. Indeed, many ran out of milk and water during the 18-hour wait.
Elderly passengers suffered too. Some missed medical appointments in Mumbai while sitting in the heat. Consequently, many complained of dehydration and anxiety. Instead of a quick trip, the journey became an exhausting ordeal for thousands.
Reality Check: The Disaster Management Illusion
The official narrative focuses on “safety first,” but the math doesn’t add up. One gas tanker should not paralyze a state’s primary economic corridor for 21 hours. In fact, this incident reveals a total lack of emergency exit planning. Therefore, the “pride of the state” is actually a trap during emergencies.
Officials suggested alternate routes like Tamhini Ghat or Malshej Ghat. Yet, these secondary roads lacked basic facilities and quickly choked under the extra load. Still, the government continues to collect tolls while failing to provide basic disaster relief during crises.

The Loopholes: Why Chaos Continues
The current expressway design lacks “emergency bypass” points. These are gates that can be opened to allow vehicles to perform a U-turn. In fact, the law requires certain safety standards, but enforcement is thin.
-
Exit Gaps: There are no legal ways to exit the highway once stuck in the Khopoli ghat section.
-
Infrastructure: Helipads, as suggested by entrepreneur Sudhir Mehta, are missing despite their low cost.
-
Speed Control: Despite “smart” cameras, heavy tankers still move at dangerous speeds through the ghats.
What This Means for You
If you travel this route, keep an emergency kit in your car. Always carry extra water, snacks, and a portable charger. Therefore, you won’t be reliant on non-existent roadside aid. Also, check real-time maps before entering the expressway at Khalapur or Urse.
Next Steps
Keep an eye on the MSRDC inquiry report due next week. You should also support local advocacy groups calling for mandatory emergency exits every 10 kilometers. Finally, avoid the expressway during heavy rain or peak holiday hours whenever possible.
