Examination Day Schedule

The exam will be conducted in a single day across two mandatory sessions. Failure to appear for either paper will result in the candidate being marked absent for the entire examination.

  • Paper 1: 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM

  • Paper 2: 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM

Strict Eligibility: The 2.5 Lakh Rule

Securing a high percentile in JEE Main is only the first hurdle.

  • The Cut-off: Only the top 2,50,000 successful candidates (including all categories) from JEE Main 2026 Paper 1 are permitted to register.

  • The Percentage Breakdown: This 2.5 lakh pool is divided into categories (OBC-NCL, SC, ST, Gen-EWS, and Open) as per the Government of India reservation norms.

Educational Qualifications & Attempts

IIT Roorkee has maintained the rigorous attempt and age-related criteria:

  1. Two-Attempt Limit: You can only attempt JEE Advanced a maximum of two times in two consecutive years.

  2. Class 12 Timing: You must have appeared for your Class 12 (or equivalent) exams for the first time in either 2025 or 2026.

  3. Mandatory Subjects: Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics remain the non-negotiable core subjects.

Reality Check

The jump from JEE Main to JEE Advanced is notoriously steep. Still, the May 17 date provides a healthy 6-week gap after most Board exams. Therefore, while the syllabus remains largely the same, the focus must now shift entirely to multi-concept problems and high-order thinking. In fact, if you haven’t started practicing in a purely CBT (Computer-Based) environment, the interface itself might slow you down on the big day.

The Loopholes

The eligibility criteria are firm. In fact, this is an “Admission Loophole”—if you have ever accepted a seat at an IIT in the past, even if you withdrew later, you are barred from appearing in JEE Advanced 2026. Therefore, “rank improvement” by re-appearing is only possible if you didn’t join an IIT previously. Still, the “Attempt Loophole” remains; if your 2025 Class 12 result was withheld for any reason, you must provide legal documentation to ensure 2026 is counted as your valid first or second attempt.

What This Means for You

If you are an aspirant, mark April 23 on your calendar. First, realize that the registration window is incredibly short (only 9 days); any delay in uploading your Caste or EWS certificates could be fatal to your application. Then, if you are a JEE Main topper, understand that Paper 1 and Paper 2 are equally weighted; you should practice “stamina building” to stay sharp during the 5.5 hours of total testing time.

Finally, understand that the official website is your only source of truth. You should only visit jeeadv.ac.in for updates. Before you register, ensure your JEE Main 2026 details are exactly mirrored in your Advanced application to avoid “data mismatch” errors that could lead to the cancellation of your admit card.

What’s Next

The JEE Main 2026 Session 2 results are expected to be out by the third week of April. Then, look for the Information Brochure on the IIT Roorkee portal for specific category-wise registration fees. Finally, expect the JEE Advanced 2026 results to be announced by the second week of June, followed by the JoSAA counseling process.
