Iran Grants “Friendly” Passage to Indian Vessels in the Strait of Hormuz

As the West Asia conflict intensifies, the Strait of Hormuz—the world’s most critical maritime chokepoint—has become a selective gateway. Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi confirmed on Thursday that while the waterway is closed to “enemies,” it remains open to “friendly nations,” explicitly naming India, China, Russia, Pakistan, and Iraq.

This “case-by-case” clearance is vital for New Delhi, as the strait traditionally handles nearly 50% of India’s total oil imports.

The Current Maritime Status

Despite the “friendly” label, there is no blanket permission for Indian ships. Each transit requires individual coordination between New Delhi and Tehran.

  • Successful Transits: Since the start of the current hostilities, four Indian-flagged LPG carriers (including the Shivalik, which recently docked at Mundra Port) have safely navigated the strait.

  • Vessels in Waiting: Currently, 20 Indian-flagged merchant vessels carrying approximately 540 Indian sailors are positioned to the west of the waterway, awaiting clearance to exit the Persian Gulf.

  • Government Assurance: Rajesh Kumar Sinha, Special Secretary in the Shipping Ministry, has confirmed that all 540 sailors are currently safe and in constant communication with Indian authorities.

India’s Diplomatic Balancing Act

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) is navigating a complex landscape to ensure energy security for 1.4 billion people. While the US and its allies have faced restrictions in the strait, India is leveraging its long-standing diplomatic ties with Iran to maintain a “energy corridor.”

Investigative Insight: The “Friendship” Premium

The “friendly nation” status comes with a strategic subtext. By allowing Indian and Chinese vessels through while blocking others, Iran is effectively using the Strait of Hormuz as a tool of geopolitical leverage. India’s “case-by-case” approval suggests that Tehran expects continued diplomatic “neutrality” or support from New Delhi in international forums. Furthermore, India is exploring the use of the Chabahar Port as a long-term alternative to bypass traditional flashpoints, though Hormuz remains irreplaceable for bulk oil tankers in the immediate term.
