Following a volatile Monday that saw the IMD upgrade its alert to “Orange,” New Delhi remains under a “Yellow Alert” for Tuesday, March 31, 2026. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts a generally cloudy sky with very light rain or localized drizzling likely during the afternoon and evening hours.

While the heat remains in check, residents should be prepared for sudden atmospheric shifts, including lightning and gusty winds.

Tuesday’s Forecast: Wind and Thunder

The weather activity today is expected to be intermittent rather than a continuous downpour.

  • Precipitation: Scattered light rain or drizzle across the National Capital Region (NCR).

  • Wind Conditions: Sustained speeds of 20–30 kmph, with sudden gusts potentially reaching 40 kmph.

  • Timing: The peak probability for thunderstorms is slated for the late afternoon.

  • Surrounding Regions: Similar conditions, including potential dust storms, are expected in parts of Haryana (Rewari, Palwal, Nuh) and Rajasthan (Bhiwadi).

The Science Behind the Storm: Western Disturbances

The current “unseasonal” moisture is being driven by a complex meteorological setup:

  1. Primary Driver: A significant Western Disturbance currently positioned over North Iran and the Caspian Sea.

  2. Secondary Factor: An active cyclonic circulation hovering over Northwest Rajasthan, which is drawing moisture into the plains.

  3. Future Outlook: Another weather system is already on the horizon, expected to hit around April 2, bringing more light rain to Delhi on April 3 and 4.

Air Quality Impact: A Temporary “Washout”

One silver lining to the gusty winds and rain is the impact on Delhi’s persistent pollution.

  • Pollutant Dispersion: Strong winds (40 kmph+) are highly effective at breaking up stagnant air pockets, physically “sweeping” particulate matter out of the city.

  • Rain-Wash Effect: Even light drizzle helps settle larger dust particles, though it often provides only a temporary reprieve.

  • AQI Trend: Expect the Air Quality Index to hover in the ‘Moderate’ to ‘Poor’ category today, a slight improvement from the ‘Very Poor’ levels seen earlier this month.

Investigative Insight: The “Iran-Caspian” Connection

It is rare for a Western Disturbance to be so clearly traced back to the Caspian Sea this late in March. Usually, by the end of the month, the “heat low” over Central India begins to dominate. However, the current system is exceptionally deep, likely fueled by unusually warm sea surface temperatures in the Caspian region earlier this winter. This “energy injection” is why we are seeing 60–80 kmph gusts in neighboring Haryana. For Delhiites, this means that while the rain may be “light,” the electrical activity (lightning) could be disproportionately high due to the collision of cold Mediterranean air with the rising heat of the Indian plains.
