Apple Issues Urgent “DarkSword” Security Patch: Why iOS 18.7.7 is a Mandatory Update

In an unprecedented security move, Apple expanded the availability of iOS 18.7.7 on April 1, 2026, to include nearly all iPhone models originally released with iOS 18. This “holdout” update is specifically designed for users who have chosen not to upgrade to iOS 26, protecting them against the highly sophisticated “DarkSword” exploit kit.

Initially limited to the iPhone X series, the patch is now available for everything from the iPhone 11 to the latest iPhone 16 and 16e models.

Understanding the “DarkSword” Threat

DarkSword is a “zero-click” or “one-click” exploit chain that allows attackers to fully compromise an iPhone simply by directing the user to a malicious website via Safari. Unlike traditional malware, it requires no app installation.

  • The Payload: It deploys three distinct malware families: GhostBlade (data stealer), GhostKnife (backdoor), and GhostSaber (code execution).

  • Information at Risk: DarkSword can exfiltrate text messages, call history, Wi-Fi passwords, Health data, root location history, and calendar entries.

  • Targeted Regions: Google’s Threat Intelligence Group has already observed active campaigns in Ukraine, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Malaysia.

Update Availability & Device List

If your device is capable of running iOS 26 but you are staying on iOS 18 (perhaps to avoid the “Liquid Glass” interface overhaul), you must manually install this sub-version.

How to Install the Security Fix

Since this is an “alternative” update for those not moving to the next major OS, it may be hidden at the bottom of your update screen:

  1. Navigate: Go to Settings > General > Software Update.

  2. Scroll Down: You will likely see a large prompt to “Upgrade to iOS 26.” Ignore this and scroll to the very bottom.

  3. Select: Tap the section labeled “Also Available” or “Other Updates.”

  4. Install: Select iOS 18.7.7 and follow the prompts to secure your device.

Investigative Insight: The “DarkSword” Proliferation

The urgency behind this update stems from a massive lapse in “security through obscurity.” In March 2026, a security researcher reportedly leaked the DarkSword exploit kit on GitHub, effectively “democratizing” the tool for low-level cybercriminals. While Apple patched these vulnerabilities in iOS 26 months ago, a significant portion of the global user base—roughly 18%—has remained on iOS 18 to avoid the drastic UI changes of the newer system.

By releasing 18.7.7 for newer devices, Apple has broken its traditional “upgrade or be vulnerable” policy. This suggests the GhostBlade malware is considered a “supply chain level” threat, capable of doing more than just stealing personal data; it is reportedly being used in watering-hole attacks on government infrastructure. If you are an activist, journalist, or work with sensitive financial data, Apple’s rare move indicates that staying on an unpatched iOS 18 is no longer a viable risk.
