OpenAI Launches Health in ChatGPT for U.S. Users

The new feature enables eligible users in the United States to securely connect Apple Health and supported healthcare records, allowing ChatGPT to provide responses tailored to their health information while keeping connected data out of AI model training.

Medical visits, sleep patterns and activity levels. According to OpenAI, users can use this information to ask more informed questions, track changes over time and prepare for medical appointments.

Health information can be used with user permission

Rather than requiring users to upload medical documents repeatedly, Health in ChatGPT allows connected information to be referenced across conversations when permission is granted.

OpenAI said ChatGPT can compare new test results with previous ones, summarize recent health changes and explain medical information in plain language. It can also consider relevant health details when responding to broader requests, such as meal planning or exercise recommendations. Users remain in control of when the information is accessed and can revoke permission at any time.

Built on newer AI models

The company highlighted improvements in its latest AI models for health-related conversations.

According to OpenAI, GPT-5.5 Instant improved its ability to recognize situations that may require urgent medical attention, explain uncertainty and communicate complex health topics more clearly. The newer GPT-5.6 Sol model is intended to provide stronger reasoning across medical information, helping users understand visit notes, follow changes in laboratory results and prepare questions for healthcare providers.

Privacy safeguards emphasized

OpenAI said connected medical records and Apple Health data are protected with additional encryption and are not used to train its foundation AI models or for advertising purposes.

The company also noted that users decide when ChatGPT can access connected health information. By default, the service requests permission before using health data in a conversation, although users can choose to always allow access or disconnect their accounts later. If a connected account is removed, synced health information is scheduled for deletion from OpenAI’s systems within 30 days, while existing chat history remains unless deleted separately.

Multiple health providers supported

OpenAI said users can connect Apple Health, supported medical records from participating U.S. healthcare systems, One Medical, and Function Health. Those using wearable devices or fitness applications that sync with Apple Health may also make relevant data available to ChatGPT, depending on the information shared through Apple’s platform.

Company says AI complements—not replaces—medical care

While highlighting advances in health-related AI capabilities, OpenAI stressed that ChatGPT is intended to support users rather than replace healthcare professionals.

The company said it continues to work with physicians to improve the quality and safety of health conversations but acknowledged that AI systems can still make mistakes. It encouraged users to verify important information and discuss medical decisions with qualified healthcare providers.

With the launch of Health in ChatGPT, OpenAI is expanding its push into digital health by combining conversational AI with user-authorized medical information, aiming to make it easier for people to understand and manage their health records in one place.
