It’s Tuesday, January 27, 2026, and if you’re the kind of person who loses their keys in a couch cushion or a chaotic airport, Apple just dropped a lifeline. The second-gen AirTag just hit the Indian market, and it’s basically the original but with the volume and range turned way up.

The thing is, it looks exactly like the old one. But inside? It’s a different beast. Or nothing.

AirTag 2: The Field Notes

It’s an ongoing situation where Apple is trying to fix the “where is that beep coming from?” problem. Here’s the ground reality:

  • The Range Jump: Powered by the new second-gen Ultra Wideband (UWB) chip—the same one in the iPhone 17—Precision Finding now works from 50% farther away. If you’re 60 feet away instead of 40, your phone will start giving you those haptic arrows. Those too.

  • The “Loud” Factor: The speaker is now 50% louder. Let’s be real—the first AirTag sounded like a cricket with a sore throat. This one is designed to be heard even if it’s buried under a pile of laundry or inside a thick suitcase. And here’s the kicker: it has a new “distinctive chime” that’s easier to pick out in a noisy room.

  • The Airline Ally: This is huge. It integrates with the new Share Item Location feature in iOS 26. You can temporarily share your AirTag’s location with “trusted third parties,” specifically airline staff. Over 50 airlines are already on board. If your bags are in London and you’re in Delhi, you can send the ground crew a secure link to help them find it. Or nothing.

  • Wrist Tracking: For the first time, you can use Precision Finding on your Apple Watch (Series 9 or Ultra 2 and later). You don’t even need to pull out your phone.

AirTag 2: The India “Cheat Sheet”

Feature Gen 1 (2021) Gen 2 (2026)
UWB Chip U1 Chip 2nd Gen UWB Chip
Speaker Volume Standard 50% Louder
Tracking Range Standard 1.5x Greater
Price (Single) ₹3,490 ₹3,790
Price (4-Pack) ₹11,900 ₹12,900
Privacy Standard Anti-Tampering (Harder to disable)

And Here’s the Kicker…

The price has actually stayed pretty stable. While the “new tech” tax usually hits hard, Apple has kept it at ₹3,790 for a single and ₹12,900 for the 4-pack. The thing is, the older ones are being phased out immediately, so if you see a “sale” on the old ones, just know you’re losing that 50% range boost. Those too.

One side comment—you’ll need iOS 26 or later to use the advanced finding features. If your phone is older than a few years, the AirTag 2 will still work, but it’ll basically just act like the old one. Or nothing.
