The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh Orange Alert for the immediate northern coastal region, which means officials are telling people to be prepared for the worst.

The alert is in place until 10text{am today} for four key districts:

  1. Chennai

  2. Tiruvallur

  3. Kancheepuram

  4. Chengalpattu

The forecast is for moderate rain with thunderstorm and lightning in isolated places.

Jotting down the anticipated impacts:

  • Waterlogging in low-lying neighborhoods (which is already happening in places like Vyasarpadi and Kodungaiyur).

  • Slippery roads.

  • Traffic disruptions are a huge concern, especially during the morning peak hours.

 Relief in Sight?

The silver lining here is that IMD forecast data for the next few days shows the intensity is expected to ease.

  • Today (December 5): Still under heavy rainfall warning, with the Orange Alert in effect. Light to moderate rain with thunderstorms is likely until $1\ \text{pm}$ over many other districts as well (Yellow Alert issued for Cuddalore, Villupuram, Thanjavur, etc.).

  • Tomorrow (December 6): The IMD’s sub-division warnings show no warning for Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal.

The weather is likely to stabilize once this lingering system finally moves out—but not before one last, tough day of rain and waterlogging for Chennai and its suburbs. We already have reports of at least four deaths in rain-related incidents across North Tamil Nadu.

Civic teams are still working overtime to pump out excess water into canals to manage the severe flooding. Authorities are advising everyone to stay cautious in the waterlogged pockets.

End……
