Delhi Protests: VHP Clashes with Police at Bangladesh High Commission Over Hindu Youth’s Lynching

The Chanakyapuri diplomatic enclave in Delhi turned into a fortress this Tuesday, December 23, 2025. Hundreds of protesters from the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal descended on the Bangladesh High Commission, and it didn’t stay “brief” or “symbolic” for long.

The thing is, the barricades didn’t hold. Protesters managed to break through at least two layers of police cordons, leading to a messy clash where police had to use lathi charges and detentions to keep the crowd from reaching the main gate. Or nothing. Let’s be real, the anger is raw. Those too.

The Trigger: The Killing of Dipu Chandra Das

The protest is fueled by the horrific lynching of Dipu Chandra Das, a 27-year-old garment worker in Mymensingh, Bangladesh, on December 18.

  • The Allegation: He was accused of blasphemy over a supposed Facebook post—which investigators now say they found no evidence of.

  • The Brutality: He was beaten to death, his body hung from a tree, and then set on fire.

  • The Fallout: In Bangladesh, 12 people have been placed on a three-day remand as of Monday, but in India, the VHP is calling for a “blood account” and massive border blockades starting December 24.

Diplomatic Firestorm

While the streets were chaotic, the diplomatic wires were buzzing.

  • Envoy Summoned: Bangladesh’s Foreign Ministry summoned the Indian High Commissioner, Pranay Verma, in Dhaka today. They are furious about “premeditated violence” against their missions in Delhi and Siliguri.

  • Visa Shutdown: The High Commission in Delhi has suspended all visa services indefinitely, citing the “prevailing security situation.”

  • India’s Stance: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) is trying to play it down, calling some reports “misleading propaganda” and insisting they are committed to the Vienna Convention.

The Regional Context

This isn’t happening in a vacuum. It’s an ongoing spiral:

  1. Sharif Osman Hadi’s Death: The shooting of this anti-India politician in Dhaka sparked the initial wave of unrest.

  2. Minority Targeting: Since Hadi’s death, reports of attacks on Hindu homes and temples have surged.

  3. The “New Bangladesh”: Muhammad Yunus’s interim government says there is “no space” for this violence, but the VHP and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari are calling for an international intervention.

And here’s the kicker: Suvendu Adhikari has already announced a one-hour border blockade on December 24 and another massive protest on December 26. The high-security zone in Delhi is likely to stay on edge for the rest of the week.
