The wait for thousands of Class 10 graduates is nearly over. Following the closure of the application window on February 16, 2026, the India Post Department is in the final stages of preparing the circle-wise merit lists for the 28,636 Gramin Dak Sevak (GDS) vacancies. As today is March 7, 2026, we are officially entering the “result window” based on historical data.

Unlike most government recruitments, the GDS process is remarkably swift, bypassing written exams and interviews in favor of a purely automated merit-based system.

Historical Trends: When Will the 2026 List Arrive?

How to Check Your GDS Merit List

Once the “Results Released” notification flashes on the official website, follow these steps:

  1. Visit indiapostgdsonline.gov.in.

  2. Locate the “Candidate Corner” on the left sidebar.

  3. Click on “GDS 2026 Schedule 1 Shortlisted Candidates.”

  4. Select your specific state/circle (e.g., Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Bihar).

  5. Download the PDF and search for your Registration Number.

Post-Result Process: The 15-Day Deadline

Selection is only “provisional” until the physical verification is complete.

  • SMS Alert: Selected candidates will receive an automated SMS and email on their registered details.

  • 15-Day Window: You must report to the designated Engaging Authority within 15 days for document verification.

  • Basic Training: Post-verification, candidates undergo 3 days of basic training before joining.

Salary and Pay Scale for GDS/BPM

The compensation depends on the specific role and the time-related continuity allowance (TRCA).

  • Branch Postmaster (BPM): ₹12,000 – ₹29,380 per month.

  • Assistant Branch Postmaster (ABPM) / Dak Sevak: ₹10,000 – ₹24,470 per month.

Reality Check

The GDS selection is purely a numbers game. Still, the “cut-off” in many circles for General and OBC categories often hovers between 95% and 99%. Therefore, while the application is open to anyone with a passing certificate, the actual competition is among the state board toppers. In fact, many candidates with 90% marks find themselves on the waiting list rather than the first merit list.

The Loopholes

The GDS process is automated. In fact, this is a “Non-Turned Up Loophole”—nearly 20-30% of candidates in the first list do not show up for verification because they have secured better jobs or their documents are invalid. Therefore, if you don’t find your name in the first list, don’t lose hope. India Post typically releases 5 to 6 supplementary lists until June 30th to fill the vacant spots. Still, the “Document Mismatch Loophole”—where candidates enter 100% marks to get shortlisted but get rejected during physical verification—remains a major reason why supplementary lists move so quickly.

What This Means for You

If you applied for GDS 2026, keep your original documents ready today. First, realize that once the result is out, you only have a 15-day window; any delay in obtaining a medical certificate or caste certificate could lead to the cancellation of your candidature. Then, if you are from a high-cutoff circle like Haryana or Rajasthan, understand that you should track the 2nd and 3rd merit lists specifically.

Finally, understand that fake websites abound. You should only trust the indiapostgdsonline.gov.in portal for downloads. Before the results drop, double-check that your registered mobile number is active, as the selection SMS is the only official trigger for your verification process.

What’s Next

The first merit list is expected to drop between March 10 and March 15, 2026. Then, look for the Document Verification (DV) schedule to be updated on the candidate portal. Finally, expect the entire recruitment cycle for 2026 to close by June 30, 2026, after which no further lists will be entertained.
