As the tech world digests the recent launch of the MacBook Neo, attention is already shifting to the next generation of Apple’s flagship smartphones. On Monday, March 9, 2026, new reports have surfaced focusing on the “Vanilla” iPhone 18—the device expected to be the volume driver for Apple’s 2027 financial year.
Unlike the high-end “Ultra” or “Pro” models, the standard iPhone 18 is being positioned as a value-centric powerhouse, combining a revolutionary 2nm chipset with a more accessible price point.

The 2nm Revolution: The A20 & C2 Modem
The most significant leap in the iPhone 18 isn’t visible to the eye.
-
The A20 Chip: This will be Apple’s first chip manufactured on a 2-nanometer process. This allows for more transistors in a smaller space, leading to a substantial boost in on-device Apple Intelligence (AI) tasks.
-
Connectivity: A new C2 modem is rumored to accompany the chip, designed to improve network stability in low-signal areas while reducing battery drain.
Display & Design: Goodbye Notch, Hello Pill
After years of refinement, the standard model is finally catching up to the Pro aesthetic.
-
Symmetrical Bezels: Leaks suggest the iPhone 18 will feature thinner, perfectly symmetrical bezels on all four sides.
-
Cutout: The traditional Face ID notch is expected to be replaced by a more discreet pill-shaped cutout, freeing up valuable screen real estate for notifications.
Camera: Incremental but High-Resolution
Apple is reportedly reserving its “Variable Aperture” technology for the Pro and Ultra models.
-
Dual 48MP System: The vanilla 18 will likely feature a 48MP Main sensor and a 48MP Ultrawide.
-
Processing: The heavy lifting will be done by the A20 chip’s new Image Signal Processor (ISP), which is expected to offer better low-light performance and faster shutter speeds.

The Staggered Launch: September vs. March
In a major shift in strategy, Apple may move away from the “all-at-once” September launch event.
-
Phase 1 (Sept 2026): Focus on the premium tier, including the iPhone 18 Pro, 18 Pro Max, and the highly anticipated iPhone Air 2.
-
Phase 2 (March 2027): Launch the iPhone 18 and the more affordable iPhone 18e to rejuvenate sales during the second half of the product cycle.
Reality Check
The shift to a March launch for the base models is a risky gamble. Still, it allows Apple to dominate two different news cycles in a single year. Therefore, while the hardware upgrades on the vanilla 18 seem “minimal” compared to the rumored iPhone Fold, the move to a 2nm chip is a generational shift that shouldn’t be underestimated. In fact, if the A20 chip delivers on its efficiency promises, the iPhone 18 could have the best battery life of any standard iPhone to date.
The Loopholes
Apple claims the price will start at ₹85,000. In fact, this is an “Inflation Loophole”—while the sticker price remains the same, the removal of certain “in-box” accessories or the shift to higher-margin iCloud tiers often increases the total cost of ownership. Therefore, “similar pricing” doesn’t necessarily mean “same value.” Still, the “2nm Supply Loophole” remains; TSMC’s 2nm yields are still unproven for mass production. If there is a bottleneck, the March 2027 launch for the base models might actually be a necessity rather than a choice.

What This Means for You
If you are planning to buy the iPhone 17 this year, consider waiting if you value longevity. First, realize that the A20 chip in the iPhone 18 will likely be supported by iOS updates for two years longer than the A19. Then, if you are a budget-conscious buyer, understand that the iPhone 18e (expected in March 2027) might be the first time a “current-gen” iPhone becomes available at a sub-₹70,000 price point at launch.
Finally, understand that the “Pro” gap is widening. You should expect the 18 Pro models to have vastly superior cameras and display tech (like 120Hz ProMotion), which may still be missing from the vanilla 18. Before you commit to the 18, check the iPhone Air 2 leaks—it might offer a thinner, more modern design for just a slight price premium.
What’s Next
The first 2nm “Tape-Out” results from TSMC are expected by the end of 2025. Then, look for the iPhone 18 Pro production leaks in early summer 2026. Finally, expect Apple’s “Spring Forward” 2027 event to be the official stage for the vanilla iPhone 18 debut.
