The Tragedy: Grenade Attack in Tronglaobi

The unrest began after a horrific attack occurred around 1:00 AM on Tuesday in the Moirang Tronglaobi area of Bishnupur.

  • The Victims: Two siblings—Oinam Tomthin (5 years old) and his 5-month-old sister—were killed while sleeping.

  • The Family: Their mother, Pheiroijam Binita, a nurse, was critically injured and is currently undergoing treatment in Imphal. Their father is a soldier currently serving in the Indian Army.

  • The “Barbaric Act”: Manipur Chief Minister Y. Khemchand Singh (who took office in February 2026) condemned the attack as an “assault on humanity,” vowing that those responsible would be “hunted down.”

The Fallout: Mob Attack on Security Camp

Following the news of the children’s deaths, an enraged mob of approximately 400 people marched toward a central security force camp (identified as a CRPF camp) in Bishnupur.

  • Violence & Arson: Protesters allegedly vandalized the barracks and set fire to several vehicles parked inside the camp.

  • Security Response: To control the situation, security forces opened fire. Two people died from bullet injuries, and nearly 20 others were reported injured in the clash.

  • Widespread Protests: Tyres were burnt and roads blocked across Imphal, including at Sega Road and Kwakeithel, as locals demanded immediate accountability and protection.

Investigative Insight: The “Ticking Clock” in Manipur

The resurgence of violence in 2026 comes after a period of fragile peace. This latest incident, involving the death of a serving soldier’s children, has particularly inflamed public sentiment. Investigative reports indicate that rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) or mortars may have been used, highlighting an escalation in the type of weaponry being utilized by militants.

While the Artemis II mission monitors global stability from above, the situation in Manipur remains a localized “pressure cooker.” The government is now under immense pressure to not only find the perpetrators but also to prevent a return to the widespread ethnic clashes seen in previous years. With Governor’s rule and internet blackouts back in play, the next 48 hours are critical for the state’s stability.
