Maruti Suzuki is finally ready to jump into the EV game. The test drives for their first electric vehicle, the Maruti Suzuki e Vitara, are set to begin in January 2026.

The dealer dispatches are starting this month, actually, and Maruti is rolling out the EV to 500 Nexa showrooms initially—350 this month and another 150 in January. They’re making a point of being ready, you know?

Addressing EV Hesitation

Maruti’s strategy, according to Partho Banerjee, Senior Executive Officer for Marketing and Sales, is to directly tackle the three biggest concerns buyers have about EVs.

  • Range Anxiety

  • Inadequate Charging Infrastructure

  • After-Sales Service

They’re trying to build customer confidence before they even start serious sales.

The EV Specs and Range Game

The e Vitara is built on Maruti’s dedicated HEARTECT-e electric platform, which is important. It’s a proper EV platform, not a conversion.

  • Battery Options: It will come with two LFP battery options:

    • 49kWh (105.8kW output)

    • 61kWh (128kW output)

  • Range: The larger 61kWh version delivers a substantial 543 km of ARAI-certified driving range. That’s competitive, or nothing.

Building the Support System

This is where Maruti’s scale comes in. They’re not just launching a car; they’re launching a network.

  • Charging Access: They have agreements with 13 different charge point operators and aggregators. This means e Vitara users will get access to multiple public charging networks using a single interface. They already have over 2,000 exclusive charging points across their own dealer network in over 1,100 cities. The long-term plan is massive: enabling access to over 1,00,000 public charging points by FY30.

  • Service Readiness: They’ve already prepared over 1,500 EV-capable service workshops and trained about 1,50,000 personnel to handle maintenance and customer support.

Market Position and Buying Confidence

The e Vitara is entering the electric mid-size SUV segment, taking on some serious rivals like the Mahindra BE 6, Hyundai Creta Electric, Tata Curvv.ev, and MG ZS EV.

  • Price (Expected): The estimated price for the e Vitara is in the range of ₹17 Lakh to ₹22.50 Lakh (ex-showroom).

  • Buying Options: To lower the acquisition cost and boost confidence, Maruti is offering two key programs:

    • Battery as a Service (BaaS) option.

    • An assured buyback programme.

The bookings are slated to open in January 2026, lining up perfectly with the start of the test drives. Maruti plans to have five EVs in its portfolio by FY30.
