The long-awaited transformation of the New Delhi Railway Station (NDLS) is finally moving from blueprints to “rapid pace” construction. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Saturday, April 4, 2026, showcased the futuristic vision for India’s premier rail hub, confirming that the station will soon be guarded by a massive network of over 1,500 AI-based cameras to monitor every square inch of the facility.
The redevelopment, part of the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, aims to nearly double the station’s daily capacity to 7 lakh passengers while integrating it into a seamless multi-modal transport grid.

The New NDLS: A Multi-Level Marvel
The project, being executed via an EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) model, features a radical redesign of the Paharganj and Ajmeri Gate entries.
Twin Iconic Buildings: Two massive structures (Ground + 3 storeys) will flank the station, connected by a grand air concourse situated directly above the tracks.
Elevated Road Network: To end the notorious traffic snarls, a dedicated elevated road will allow passengers to “drop off” directly at the departure level, separated from arriving traffic.
AI Security Grid: 1,500+ AI cameras will use facial recognition and behavioral analytics to keep “a tab on every corner,” both inside and outside the station perimeter.
Bharat Taxi Integration: The station will feature a dedicated “Bharat Taxi” hub, ensuring last-mile connectivity is integrated into the rail booking experience.
“Next-Gen” Amrit Bharat Coaches
Minister Vaishnaw also inspected the new Amrit Bharat sample coaches, which set a new benchmark for passenger comfort and safety.
| Feature | Specification / Upgrade |
| Fire Safety | 100% compliant with HL3 international fire standards. |
| Interior Theme | Coordinated shades across PVC flooring, berth rexine, and snack tables. |
| Capacity | New station built-up area of 1,10,000 sq. m for 7 lakh daily users. |
| Connectivity | Seamless “one-tap” transition to the Delhi Metro and State Entry Road offices. |
Breaking Headlines: April 6, 2026
The NDLS revamp is gaining momentum against a backdrop of global and local urgency:

Hormuz “Jag Vikram” Watch: Only one Indian LPG vessel remains west of the Strait. The Indian Navy is currently coordinating its “safe window” transit to avoid the ongoing “Stone Age” strikes in Iran.
Delhi Weather Alert: IMD has issued a yellow alert for tomorrow, April 7. Thunderstorms and gusty winds are expected, which may briefly slow the “dug up” construction work at NDLS.
Assam “Passport” Case: CM Himanta Biswa Sarma is expected to file his defamation suit against Congress today, just as PM Modi begins his three-rally blitz in the state.
Missing Pilot Hunt: The search for the US F-15E pilot in the Iranian mountains enters day four. US Black Hawks remain on high alert near the border.
Chadha’s “Dhurandhar” Retort: Ousted MP Raghav Chadha has challenged the AAP to produce CCTV evidence of his supposed missed walkouts, stating he creates “impact, not ruckus.”
Investigative Insight: The “Brownfield” Battle
Redeveloping NDLS is arguably the most difficult “Brownfield” project in Indian history. Unlike a “Greenfield” project (like the Jewar Airport), engineers must dig and build while 400+ trains continue to pass through daily. The “large sections dug up and barricaded” seen in the Minister’s video represent a high-stakes race against time. If the April 7–8 storms bring heavy rain, the deep excavations on the Ajmeri Gate side could face flooding, potentially delaying the 2026 milestones.
Furthermore, the 1,500 AI cameras represent a significant shift toward “Surveillance-as-a-Service” in Indian public spaces. While intended for security, the integration of these cameras with the UIDAI (Aadhaar) backend could make NDLS the first “fully transparent” transit hub in India. For the daily commuter, the “Bharat Taxi” link is the real win, but for the Railway Ministry, the challenge remains: can they finish this “futuristic” hub before the West Asia war causes a further spike in the cost of construction steel and AI hardware?
