Next-Gen Toyota Fortuner: Hilux-Inspired Design Revealed in New Leaks

For nearly a decade, the Toyota Fortuner has sat atop the premium ladder-frame SUV segment in India and Southeast Asia. However, with its current design dating back to 2015, the “King of the Road” was beginning to show its age. That is about to change. Recent spy shots from international testing grounds and viral “body kit” modifications from Thailand have provided a clear look at Toyota’s roadmap for the next-gen SUV.

The message is clear: the Fortuner is getting “truck-ified.” By adopting the rugged, squared-off aesthetic of the new Hilux, Toyota is doubling down on the Fortuner’s image as a go-anywhere, do-anything machine.

The Hilux Connection: A Bolder Front Profile

The most significant change lies in the SUV’s facial architecture.

  • The Grille: The sleek, chrome-heavy design of the current “Legender” is being replaced by a massive, octagonal black grille inspired by the Hilux.

  • Branding: Following the trend of Toyota’s global “Gazoo Racing” and “Adventure” trims, a central strip now spells out “TOYOTA” in bold lettering rather than using the traditional logo.

  • Lighting: The headlamps are sharper, integrating more complex L-shaped DRLs and a revised bumper that includes a functional skid plate for off-roading.

Hybridization: The 48V Mild-Hybrid System

Toyota is not ready to go fully electric with its heavy-duty SUVs, but it is embracing “green” performance.

  • The Engine: The dependable 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel remains the core.

  • The Boost: A 48V mild-hybrid system is being integrated. This small electric motor assists during stop-start traffic and provides a “torque fill” during initial acceleration.

  • Efficiency: While not a “Strong Hybrid” like the Hycross, this system is expected to improve fuel efficiency by 5-10% and reduce the diesel “clatter” during idling.

Interior Overhaul: Closing the Equipment Gap

Critics have often pointed out that the Fortuner’s cabin lagged behind rivals in terms of tech. The next-gen model aims to silence that.

  • Tech Suite: A new 10-inch or 12-inch infotainment system is expected, featuring wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

  • Luxury Additions: For the first time, a factory-fitted electric sunroof is likely to be a standard feature in higher trims, along with a 360-degree camera and a premium JBL audio setup.

Reality Check

The Hilux-inspired front look is undeniably aggressive. Still, beneath the new skin, the Fortuner will likely retain the same TNGA-F (or an evolved IMV) ladder-frame chassis. Therefore, while it will look like a new car, the “bouncy” ride quality typical of heavy SUVs may still persist. In fact, for Indian buyers, the addition of a mild-hybrid system is more about meeting tightening emission norms than providing a “silent” EV-like driving experience.

The Loopholes

The viral video from Thailand shows a “Hilux kit” on an old frame. In fact, this is a “Visual Loophole”—it proves that the parts are somewhat interchangeable, suggesting that the “new” Fortuner might not be a “ground-up” redesign but rather a very heavy aesthetic and electronic refresh. Therefore, don’t expect a radical change in the side profile or door panels. Still, the “Hybrid Loophole”—using a 48V system—allows Toyota to call the car “Electrified” without the massive cost of a full battery-electric drivetrain.

What This Means for You

If you are planning to buy the current Fortuner, pause and wait for the year-end announcement. First, realize that the current model’s resale value might take a slight hit once the “Hilux-look” version is officially unveiled. Then, if you prioritize fuel economy, the 48V mild-hybrid version will be significantly more practical for daily city commutes than the current gas-guzzling diesel.

Finally, understand that the price will go up. You should expect a premium of ₹2 lakh to ₹4 lakh over the current pricing once the next-gen model lands in India in early 2027. Before you book, check with your dealer if they are offering “Year-End Clearout” discounts on the 2025 stock, which might be a better value if you prefer the classic look.

What’s Next

Toyota is expected to host a global reveal in Thailand by November 2026. Then, look for the “India-spec” model to be showcased at the Bharat Mobility Expo in early 2027. Finally, expect the first mild-hybrid Hilux units to arrive in Indian showrooms a few months before the Fortuner to “test the waters” for the new electrified diesel powertrain.
