India’s most celebrated sculptor is no more.Ram Sutar passed away late Wednesday night.

Actually, he was 100 years old. He breathed his last at his residence in Noida.

Specifically, his son Anil Sutar shared the news with “profound grief” today, the art world is in deep mourning.

And here’s the kicker. He was a true master of scale. In fact, he designed the Statue of Unity in Gujarat.

Basically, that is the tallest statue in the world. Consequently, his name is now synonymous with India’s national pride (let’s be real, it’s a massive legacy).

He grew up in a humble family in Maharashtra. He became a gold medallist at the JJ School of Art.

Furthermore, he didn’t just build big things. Specifically, he sculpted the meditating Mahatma Gandhi at the Parliament.

Actually, the iconic Chhatrapati Shivaji statue on those same premises was his too. In fact, he had a knack for capturing the soul of a leader (those too).

Moreover, the government recognized his genius early. Specifically, he received the Padma Shri in 1999.

And then Y followed. He was honored with the Padma Bhushan in 2016. Basically, he swept all the top honors.

The thing is, he never really stopped working. Actually, he was recently conferred with the Maharashtra Bhushan Puraskar.

Consequently, he remained a visionary until his final days. Instead of a quiet end, he leaves behind a landscape filled with his giants…..
