US Clears F-16 Tech for Pakistan: $686M Deal Amid India Tensions
The United States has just approved the sale of advanced technology and support for Pakistan’s fleet of F-16 fighter jets, a package valued at a hefty $686 million. This deal was struck right amid simmering regional tensions—and right after a nasty five-day war between India and Pakistan in May.

What Pakistan is Getting
This isn’t just routine maintenance. It’s a strategic upgrade package that extends the jets’ lives until 2040.

Secure Networking (Link-16): The deal includes 92 Link-16 systems. This is the key kicker. Link-16 is a secure military data link network that allows real-time communication between aircraft, ships, and ground forces. It’s used by the US and NATO allies. This provides “seamless integration and interoperability” between the Pakistan Air Force and the US Air Force.

Identification Systems: They’re getting the Advanced Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) system to tell friendly aircraft from enemy ones instantly.

Training & Spares: The majority of the cost ($649 million) covers software, hardware updates, spare parts, and training to modernize the F-16 Block-52 and Mid-Life Upgrade models.

Training Bombs: They are also getting six Mk-82 inert bomb bodies—which are empty metal casings used for training or testing, not live explosives.
The Geopolitical Pressure Point
The approval comes as the Trump administration is simultaneously putting the squeeze on India. This isn’t just a military sale; it’s a diplomatic weapon.

Pressure on India: The US has been pressing PM Narendra Modi to buy more weapons from them. India recently put a hold on some US weapon purchases. The US also hit India with a 50% tariff on some imports for buying cheap Russian crude oil, claiming this violated sanctions against Russia.

India’s Reaction: New Delhi has always opposed US defense cooperation with Pakistan, claiming the F-16s are used against India. The US, naturally, pre-empted this, telling Congress the sale “will not alter the basic military balance in the region.” Let’s be real, India isn’t going to believe that.

Pakistan’s Balancing Act: While this US package is huge, the thing is, Pakistan still gets over 80% of its weapons from China since 2020. As analyst Praveen Donthi said, Islamabad is trying to balance between Washington and Beijing, benefiting from both. Pakistan used Chinese J-10s and JF-17s in the May conflict.
The approval gives Pakistan a critical upgrade and extends the life of its most potent Western aircraft. But it also reignites a deep, old tension with India. The 30-day Congressional review period has now started, and India is watching every move.
