OpenAI to Retire GPT-4o and Older Models by February 2026
The era of GPT-4 is officially coming to an end. Specifically, OpenAI has confirmed it will remove GPT-4o and several legacy models from ChatGPT on February 13, 2026. This list includes GPT-4.1, its “mini” versions, and the o4-mini model. Notably, this move is part of a massive shift toward the new GPT-5 series. While these changes affect ChatGPT users, developers using the API will still have access for now.

Why Is GPT-4o Being Retired Now?
Many users still love GPT-4o for its “conversational warmth” and creative tone. However, OpenAI says the technology has moved too far ahead to keep supporting older systems. Consequently, the company has spent months building those “human-like” qualities into the newer GPT-5.1 and GPT-5.2 models. Furthermore, data shows that 99.9% of users have already switched to the faster, smarter GPT-5.2 version.
