Presided over by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in Visakhapatnam, the induction of the sixth Project 17A stealth frigate showcases a massive 50% reduction in domestic manufacturing timelines.

VISAKHAPATNAM — Marking a major upgrade to India’s maritime strike envelope, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh formally commissioned the advanced stealth frigate INS Mahendragiri (F38) into the Indian Navy’s Eastern Fleet on Saturday.

The commissioning ceremony, held at the strategic Naval Dockyard in the port city of Visakhapatnam, represents a major milestone for the Indian Navy’s multi-billion-dollar Project 17A (Nilgiri-class) program. Named after the majestic mountain range in the Eastern Ghats, the warship is the very first vessel in Indian naval history to bear the name Mahendragiri, sailing under the operational command motto: “Mighty, Majestic, Matchless.”

1. Advanced Lethality: The Combat and Sensor Suite

Displacing roughly 6,670 tonnes at full load and maintaining a sustained top speed of 28 knots, INS Mahendragiri is engineered for multi-mission, high-intensity naval warfare. The vessel is designed around a low-radar-cross-section hull form that drastically reduces its signature across electronic battlefield spectrums.

Multi-Domain Strike Envelope:
🚀 Anti-Air: Multifunction Radar + Long-Range SAMs ➔ 🚢 Anti-Surface: Mach 3 BrahMos Supersonic Missiles ➔ ⚓ Anti-Submarine: Indigenous Rockets + Torpedo Launchers

The frontline platform is equipped with heavy offensive systems, allowing it to act as an unescorted capital asset deep within contested maritime boundaries.

INS Mahendragiri Technical & Weapon Specifications

System Category Hardware Integration Component Operational Capability & Purpose
Primary Offensive Weapon BrahMos Surface-to-Surface Missile system. Supersonic, Mach 3 cruise missiles designed to neutralize heavily armored surface targets at long ranges.
Air Defence Shield Multifunction surveillance radar paired with vertical-launch Surface-to-Air Missiles (SAMs). Intercepts inbound anti-ship missiles, high-altitude aircraft, and loitering drone swarms.
Sub-Surface Combat Suite Indigenous rocket launchers, heavy torpedo tubes, and an Integrated Anti-Submarine Defence System. Detects, tracks, and destroys modern diesel-electric and nuclear hunter-killer submarines.
Propulsion System Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) layout driving Controllable Pitch Propellers. Combines fuel-efficient cruising endurance with rapid sprint acceleration for tactical maneuvering.

2. Setting New Industry Standards: Timelines Halved

A defining takeaway highlighted during the ceremony was the massive industrial acceleration achieved by the Indian defense ecosystem. Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Krishna Swaminathan revealed that the production cycle between the vessel’s initial launch and final delivery was slashed by nearly 50%, plummeting from an industry average of 63 months down to just 31 months.

Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) completes structural assembly in Mumbai, launching the hull into the water for outfitting.

2.Single Sea Trial Evaluation:April 2026.

The vessel wraps up all comprehensive weapons and platform integration testing during a single, highly efficient sea trial, avoiding the typical 5-to-7 trial cycles.

3.Active Fleet Commissioning:July 11, 2026.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh formally inducts the warship into the Eastern Fleet in Visakhapatnam, marking the sixth P17A ship to enter service in a 1.5-year window.

3. Industrial Significance and the 2026 Fleet Blueprint

With over 75% indigenous content, the construction of INS Mahendragiri integrated a domestic production web of more than 200 Indian firms, including numerous Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

During his keynote address, Rajnath Singh noted that future wars would still be won by national resolve and trained sailors rather than relying purely on artificial intelligence. He highlighted the Navy’s dual role as a combat force and economic guardian, pointing to the success of recent operations like Operation Urja Suraksha, which successfully escorted 18 merchant vessels hauling over ₹9,000 crore in vital cargo through recent conflicts in West Asia.

Defense officials indicated that Mahendragiri’s arrival is part of an aggressive fleet expansion plan. Naval planners aim to commission at least 18 vessels before the end of 2026, including the final Project 17A frigate, INS Vindhyagiri, alongside anti-submarine shallow water craft and deep-sea diving support platforms.

The Ministerial Outlook: “INS Mahendragiri is a blue-water warship capable of protecting India’s maritime interests not just near our shorelines, but far out into the deep oceans for weeks at a time,” Singh stated. “It reinforces our role as the preferred security partner in the Indian Ocean Region and a key contributor to a stable, secure Indo-Pacific.”
