To increase the income of the Indian farmer, the Central Government is continuously taking steps. In this series, the government will now provide certified seeds of jute to the farmers.

In an effort to improve the production and productivity of raw jute in the country, the Ministry of Textiles, through the Jute Corporation of India (JCI), will provide certified jute seeds to farmers. The National Seeds Corporation (NSC), a central enterprise under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare (Ministry of Agriculture), will ensure the supply of these quality and certified seeds to JCI. In this regard, an MoU was signed today between JCI and National Seed Corporation (NSC). Union Textile Minister Smriti Zubin Irani and Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Narendra Singh Tomar participated in the signing of the MoU through virtual mode, in which CMDs of both organizations were also present. The MoU will ensure the distribution of certified jute seeds through JCI in the year 2021-2022.

As a result of the MoU, JCI will distribute certified seeds of JRO-204 variety of 10,000 quintal jute for the 2021-22 crop year. For this first commercial distribution, certified seeds will be purchased by JCI from National Seeds Corporation (NSC). This will benefit 5-6 lakh farmer families, there will be a huge reduction in the market of fake seeds and the revenue of JCI will increase. Increase in productivity will increase farmers ‘income and will go a long way to reach the goal of doubling farmers’ income by 2022.

Jute farmers will get big help- Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Narendra Singh Tomar expressed happiness over the signing of the MoU between the National Seeds Corporation and the Jute Corporation of India (JCI). He appreciated the work of National Seed Corporation in providing good quality seeds at low cost to jute farmers.


Narendra Tomar emphasized the importance of improving the production and quality of raw jute in the country, and said that with this, the value addition of products would help in achieving the Prime Minister’s goal of self-reliant India. He also emphasized to prepare a road map for building jute export capacity within the stipulated time frame. Union Textile Minister Smriti Zubin Irani took the opportunity between Ministry of Agriculture and Textile Ministry to provide certified jute seeds to farmers on the occasion. Thanked for the synergy, which started three years ago.

He said that the National Technical Textiles Mission announced in February this year has a special provision for jute and jute textile products. There is immense potential for increasing use of jute in constructing embankments (lining) of water bodies, in road construction and in constructing structures to prevent landslides in hilly areas.

The Union Textile Minister said that apart from being self-sufficient in the need of jute for the domestic market, the next goal is to strengthen the country’s export potential in terms of jute and its products.


Jute Project, three agencies of the region under iCare – Jute Corporation of India (JCI), National Jute Board (NJB) and Central Research Institute for Jute and Allied Fibers (CRIJAF) for the overall improvement of quantity and quality of jute modern agriculture. – are promoting science based practices.

The quality of raw jute produced in the last few years has been adversely affected due to low quality seeds and / or spurious seeds. This MoU will ensure that jute farmers are able to obtain the best quality seeds for various agro-climatic conditions and intensive cropping systems.
