DMRC officials said that due to the advanced features in these new ‘baggage scanners’, the elderly and women passengers will be more comfortable while lifting and storing heavy goods for scanning.

Checking luggage of passengers at metro stations in Delhi is now going to be easier. Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has started installing state-of-the-art ‘baggage scanners’ at metro stations in a phased manner to provide additional security.

Giving information about this on Sunday, DMRC officials said that due to the advanced features in these new ‘baggage scanners’, elderly and women passengers will be more comfortable while lifting and storing heavy luggage for scanning.

DMRC said that at present 34 such ‘baggage’ with passenger friendly facilities in place of X-BIS system at Kashmere Gate, AIIMS, University, HUDA City Centre, Rajouri Garden, Mayur Vihar Phase-1, Noida Sector-18, Palam station.

Scanners’ have already been installed. Gradually by the end of this year, more than 250 such ‘baggage scanners’ will be installed at all stations of Delhi Metro. Presently around 400 Ex-BIS machines are installed at various metro stations in DMRC network.

DMRC in a statement said that to further upgrade the ‘X-Ray Baggage Scanning System’ (X-BIS System) at the security check points of the metro station, DMRC has started installation of state-of-the-art ‘baggage scanners’ in a phased manner.

These advanced ‘baggage scanners’ are equipped with additional features which include fast clearance of baggage, advanced and effective surveillance, continuous audio-video surveillance.

These scanners will now be able to check up to 550 bags per hour, as against the earlier machines capable of checking around 350 bags per hour. For this the speed of ‘conveyor belt’ has been increased from 18 cm per second to 30 cm per second. Officials said the aim is to decongest the heavy rush of passengers at the search places, especially during peak hours.

He said that the advanced features in these new ‘baggage scanners’ would ensure safety for the passengers and also facilitate the elderly and women passengers while lifting and unloading heavy baggage during scanning.

Officials said a 360-degree camera mounted just above the ‘baggage scanner’ will be able to capture clear audio and video footage of the X-BIS process, which can be used for any untoward incident such as theft, disputes between passengers, cases of security staff. may be useful.

Other ancillary provisions available to baggage operators (Central Industrial Security Force personnel) on duty for scanning machines include wireless sets, metal detectors and charging ports for mobile phones.
