Imran Khan’s legal mountain just got a lot steeper. The thing is, a special court in Pakistan has sentenced the former Prime Minister and his wife, Bushra Bibi, to 17 years in prison each for corruption.

Actually, the case centers on a luxury Bulgari jewelry set—including a necklace, earrings, and a ring—gifted by the Saudi Crown Prince in Specifically, prosecutors argued the couple undervalued the set (worth roughly ₹80 million) to buy it from the state treasury for a mere ₹2.9 million.

As a result, they were found guilty of criminal breach of trust and misconduct.9 Consequently, both have been slapped with a fine of ₹16.4 million, and failure to pay will add another six months to their stay (those too).

And here’s the kicker. The sentence might not start for a long time.

Basically, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar clarified that this is a “consecutive sentence.”11 Instead of running at the same time as his current 14-year term in the £190 million case, this 17-year stint will only begin after the previous one ends. In fact, the court noted it took a “lenient view” because of Khan’s age (73) and Bushra Bibi’s gender.

And then Y followed. PTI leaders immediately slammed the decision, claiming the trial was a “closed-door” affair where lawyers were notified only hours before the verdict..

[Table: Imran Khan’s Major Convictions & Sentences – Dec 2025]

Case Title Sentence Duration Key Allegation
£190 Million Case 14 Years Real estate fraud/Al-Qadir Trust
Toshakhana-1 14 Years (Overturned/Suspended) Illegal sale of state watches
Toshakhana-2 17 Years Undervaluing Bulgari Jewelry Set
Iddat Case 7 Years Unlawful marriage (Suspended)
Total Jail Time 30+ Years Excluding pending ATA/May 9 trials

Moreover, the conditions of Khan’s detention are sparking an international outcry. Specifically, a UN Special Rapporteur recently warned that Khan’s “prolonged solitary confinement” amounts to psychological torture.

Actually, reports from inside Adiala Jail suggest he is confined for 23 hours a day with constant camera surveillance and zero interaction with other inmates.16 As a result, his sons have publicly expressed fears for his life, claiming he is being denied adequate light and ventilation.

Consequently, the PTI has called for a fresh street movement, with the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister reportedly preparing supporters for massive protests (let’s be real, the heat in Islamabad is rising).

The thing is, the government insists they are just following the law. In fact, the Minister of State for Law stated that “misuse of office” was proven beyond a doubt.19

Basically, the prosecution presented 20 witnesses over 80 hearings to prove the gift was never properly submitted to the protocol section. Instead of a tidy wrap-up, the defense claims the main witness was someone Khan himself had previously removed from office for bias.

And then Y followed. With the High Court appeal pending, the spotlight remains on the “rolling” nature of these convictions, which many believe are designed to keep the PTI founder out of the political arena permanently.
