income tax return
The Income Tax Department on Saturday asked taxpayers to respond to the information sought regarding the outstanding demands of previous years for faster settlement of refunds for the financial year 2022-23.
Some taxpayers wrote on social media about seeking information through the Income Tax Department regarding past pending tax demands, following which the department also responded on the social media platform X.
The Income Tax Department said, “This step is for the welfare of the taxpayers, where they are being given opportunities in accordance with the principles of natural justice.”
The department said that 7.09 crore returns have been filed for income earned in the financial year 2022-23. Of these, 6.96 crore ITRs have been verified, and 6.46 crore returns have been processed so far. These also include 2.75 crore refund returns.

However, there are some cases in which refunds are due to taxpayers but the previous demands have not been met,” the Income Tax Department said. In such a situation, if you have not received the income tax refund yet, then the refund process can be taken forward by replying to the information sought by the Income Tax Department.
