Talking on this matter, the senior officer said that there are many reasons behind extending the deadline, but one of the main reasons is that many Indians live abroad. In such a situation, these NRIs will get one more month’s time, through which they will be able to easily deposit Rs 2000 notes back in the banks.

How many notes have come back?

The Reserve Bank of India had announced to withdraw Rs 2000 notes on May 19, 2023. According to the central bank, as on March 31, 2023, a total of Rs 2000 notes worth Rs 3.62 lakh crore were in circulation,

which had come down to Rs 3.56 lakh crore by May 19. According to the data released on September 1, 2023, Rs 2000 notes worth Rs 3.32 lakh crore had returned to the banking system. In such a situation, by the beginning of September, a total of 93 percent notes have already entered the banking system. Even after this, notes worth about Rs 24,000 crore are still left.

RBI wants 100% return of currency notes

According to experts, the Reserve Bank is trying to get 100 percent of the Rs 2000 notes back into the banking system. For this, the bank can extend the deadline for withdrawal of Rs 2000 notes. This will give some time to the people living abroad and they will also be able to return the Rs 2000 notes to the banking system.
