Nitin Gadkari recently made it mandatory for the safety of people in 8-seater vehicles, which was to be effective from October 1, but now it has been extended for a year. The Union Minister said that the proposal to make six airbags mandatory in passenger cars has to be postponed for a year due to supply chain constraints globally.

The Union Minister has given this information through Twitter regarding six airbags and wrote that “The auto industry has had a negative impact due to global supply chain constraints and economic constraints. There is a continuous decline in the supply of raw materials, in such a situation, the proposal to make 6 airbags mandatory will now be considered effective from 01 October 2023.

Significantly, Nitin Gadkari had earlier stressed on the need to adopt safety norms for cars in the country. Gadkari had said that he should also think about the safety of people using small economy cars.

He said that most of the automobile manufacturers in India are exporting cars with 6 airbags. But because of its high cost, they are hesitant to buy these cars. Gadkari wonders why automobile manufacturers are not thinking about the lives of people using economy cars in the country.
