Global Passport Index 2026 India ranking

Despite incremental gains in investment and quality of life indicators, India edges down one rank due to strict global mobility parameters.

NEW DELHI — The Indian passport has slipped one position below its previous placement, settling at 125th overall in the fifth annual edition of the Global Passport Index. Published by the residency and citizenship advisory firm Global Citizen Solutions (GCS), the 2026 report evaluates 197 countries using a holistic methodology that spans beyond basic border-crossing permissions.

The minor decline reverses a brief upward trend recorded last year when India climbed to 124th place, having previously maintained a static 127th rank between 2021 and 2023.

1. Understanding the Global Passport Index Methodology

Unlike traditional metrics like the Henley Passport Index—which evaluate passport strength solely on the volume of visa-free travel destinations—the Global Passport Index determines its rankings through a composite evaluation across three distinct weight brackets:

  • Enhanced Mobility (50%): Travel freedom, visa-free access, and ease of entry.

  • Investment Potential (25%): Economic stability, ease of business operations, and financial integration.

  • Quality of Living (25%): Personal safety, healthcare infrastructure, education, and individual liberties.

Despite the overall slip in rank caused by rigid global mobility metrics, India achieved a five-year high composite score of 45.1, buoyed by shifting upward to 94th in Investment and jumping 11 places to 118th in Quality of Living.

2. Global Standings: How India Compares Regional and Globally

The 2026 index demonstrates overwhelming dominance by European nations, which claim the vast majority of the top ten positions.
