Moving tasks from local desktop clients to remote servers ensures that scheduled agentic workflows and complex automations continue processing even when you close your laptop or go offline.

SAN FRANCISCO — Anthropic is moving its agentic AI tool, Claude Cowork, off the local machine and into the cloud. The shift means that scheduled workflows and long-running automation tasks will keep processing even when you close your laptop, shut down your computer, or go completely offline.

Previously a desktop-exclusive application restricted by a device’s power and connectivity states, Cowork is officially expanding to web and mobile surfaces as an “always-on” background assistant.

1. Core Feature Upgrades & UI Consolidation

  • Cloud-Based Execution: Tasks and scheduled automations run entirely on Anthropic’s remote servers. If your machine goes offline or drops into sleep mode, your agents keep working.

  • Multi-Device Continuity: Start a task on your desktop, check its progress on your phone during a commute, and collect the final output from any web browser.

  • Unified Interface: On web and desktop, Claude Chat and Cowork are now integrated into a single home interface. Users can instantly switch between regular chat and agentic delegation via a simple modal toggle, seamlessly carrying over active projects and artifacts.

  • Dedicated Mobile Section: The Claude iOS and Android apps are receiving a dedicated Cowork section, turning mobile devices into a remote control to steer or approve tasks on the go.

⚠️ Note on Migration: Existing scheduled tasks will not automatically move to the cloud. They will continue to run locally and require your machine to stay on until you manually transition them via the Scheduled Tasks page.

2. Market Positioning & Competitors

The transition to cloud computing allows Anthropic to go toe-to-toe with key rivals competing for the non-developer automation market:

Competitor / Tool Engine Base Infrastructure Status Target Audience
Claude Cowork (Anthropic) Claude Engine Cloud & Local Hybrid Knowledge workers, Ops, Content creators
Copilot Cowork (Microsoft) Claude Engine Cloud-Native (M365 Tenant) Enterprise & Office Ecosystems
Gemini Agent Mode (Google) Gemini Engine Cloud-Native Workspace users
Operator (OpenAI) GPT Engine Cloud-Native General automation / Developers

While the desktop app remains Anthropic’s designated surface for “deep work”—largely because it retains direct, permission-based access to local directories and browsers—the cloud release bridges a massive usability gap, offering a low-risk alternative to hosted agent frameworks like OpenClaw.

3. What are People Actually Using AI Agents For?

Alongside the product release, Anthropic published anonymized usage insights pulling from 1.2 million sessions in May. Despite agentic AI tracking its roots back to software engineering, data reveals that everyday business logic dominates the platform.

Claude Cowork Usage Breakdown:
💼 Business Operations: 33% | ✍️ Content Creation: 16.4% | 💻 Software Dev: 8.7% | 🌐 Other Knowledge Work: 41.9%

Anthropic refers to this dominant chunk as “everyday knowledge work”—tasks like reconciling spreadsheets, pulling scattered updates into status reports, or building onboarding checklists. These are tasks rarely featured explicitly in a job description but which consume a massive share of the average employee’s week.

Rollout, Pricing, and Beta Limits

The operational pipeline for testing and deploying these cloud capabilities is moving along a staggered release framework.

1.Max Plan Beta Access:Available Now.

Subscribers on Anthropic’s premium Max plan ($100/month) gain immediate access to the web, mobile, and cloud-backed interface.

2.Promotional Limit Window:Through August 5, 2026.

To encourage cloud-based user experimentation, Anthropic extends its doubled usage limits for all active Cowork accounts.

3.Wider Tier Expansion:Coming Weeks.

Anthropic scales the cloud infrastructure outward, progressively introducing the background agent architecture to lower paid subscription tiers.
