It’s Tuesday, January 27, 2026, and if you’re looking out your window in Delhi or the northern hills, the “Western Disturbance” isn’t just a weather forecast anymore—it’s a reality. The second major spell of the season is peaking right now, and it’s turning the north into a beautiful but dangerous mess.
The thing is, the “Yellow Alert” in Delhi and the “Orange Alert” in the hills are colliding today. Or nothing.

The North India Siege: Field Notes
It’s an ongoing situation where transport, power, and safety are all hanging by a thread. Here’s the ground reality:
-
Delhi-NCR’s Rainy Tuesday: The capital woke up to rain and thunder today. The IMD’s Yellow Alert is in full swing. We’re looking at wind speeds of 40–50 kmph, occasionally gusting to 60. Let’s be real—the air quality (AQI) has dipped back into the ‘Poor’ category (around 281), so the rain isn’t exactly “cleaning” the air like we hoped. Those too.
-
The Uttarakhand Avalanche Threat: This is the scary part. A Level-3 (Orange) warning is active for Chamoli (areas above 3,000m), while Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Pithoragarh, and Bageshwar are under Level-2 (Yellow). The thing is, six national highways, including the ones to Badrinath and Gangotri, are currently shut.
-
Himachal’s 1,250-Road Lockdown: In Himachal, more than 1,250 roads are closed. Lahaul and Spiti is basically a no-go zone with nearly 300 road blockages. The thing is, over 1,900 power transformers (DTRs) are down, leaving hundreds of villages in the dark. Shimla is the worst hit.
-
Kashmir’s Flight Chaos: And here’s the kicker—at least 50 flights have been cancelled at Srinagar Airport today due to zero visibility. The Srinagar-Jammu National Highway (NH-44) is also shut near the Navyug Tunnel. Tourists who stayed for Republic Day are currently stranded. Or nothing.

Weather Alert Grid (Jan 27–28, 2026)
| Region | Alert Level | Main Threat | Status |
| Delhi-NCR | Yellow | Rain, Hail, 60kmph Gusts | Active (Morning to Night) |
| Chamoli (UK) | Orange | Level-3 Avalanche | High Risk (>3000m) |
| Lahaul & Spiti (HP) | Orange | Heavy Snow, Road Closures | 1,250+ roads shut |
| Srinagar (J&K) | Intense | Flight Cancellations | 50+ flights grounded |
And Here’s the Kicker…
While this current spell is supposed to taper off by tomorrow (Jan 28), the IMD is already watching another Western Disturbance hitting on the night of January 30. The thing is, the temporary 3 to 5-degree rise in temperatures expected on the 29th might just be a “fake spring” before the next round of snow hits. Those too.
One side comment—if you’re driving in the plains today, watch out for hailstorms in Western UP and Rajasthan. It’s an ongoing situation where a “chilly” morning can turn into a “hail-damaged” car in minutes. Or nothing.
