IMD Issues Red Alert for Vast Areas of Delhi as Intense Cloud Mass Approaches

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) upgraded its weather warning to a Red Alert for the majority of the national capital on Monday morning. The department has forecast very light to light rain accompanied by severe thunderstorms, lightning, and intense winds blowing at 60–70 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 80 kmph.

The emergency escalation came shortly after an initial yellow alert was issued around 7:00 AM, following a sudden shift in atmospheric conditions.

Technical Meteorological Inflow

At 8:20 AM, radar imagery identified a fresh, intense convective cloud mass moving southeastwards across Rohtak, Haryana. This active cell is moving directly into the capital, bringing severely disruptive weather to most municipal zones.

The highest level of weather warning has been strictly implemented across:

• Northern & Northwestern Sectors: Bawana, Pitampura, and surrounding pockets.

• Central & New Delhi: ITO, Rajeev Chowk, Patel Nagar, President House, and Buddha Jayanti Park.

• Eastern & Northeastern Sectors: All of Shahdara and neighboring areas.

• Southern & Southwestern Sectors: Safdarjung, Rajouri Garden, Lodi Road, Kalkaji, Tughlakabad, and parts of the southeast.

Current Temperature, Rainfall, and Air Quality Metrics

Despite the morning rain showers, summer heat dynamics remain active. The city recorded a minimum temperature of 28.2°C, with daytime mercury levels still projected to peak between 38°C and 40°C.

Air Quality Index: As of 9:00 AM on Monday, Delhi’s AQI stood at 135, keeping the capital’s air quality within the Moderate category.

Weekly Outlook: Rising Weekend Temperatures

While the convective clouds bring temporary respite and heavy winds today, the IMD’s extended weekly chart points toward a rapid rise in temperature over the coming days.

• Tuesday: Continued risk of isolated thunderstorms and brief rain spells toward the afternoon and evening.

• Mid-Week Transition: Skies are expected to clear partially, allowing solar radiation to intensify.

• The Weekend: A fresh spell of rain is projected for Saturday. However, both day and night temperatures will climb sharply, with maximum weekend temperatures soaring to between 42°C and 44°C, and minimums rising to 30°C–32°C.

Residents are advised to secure loose outdoor structures against high-velocity winds and brace for potential traffic disruptions during peak storm hours.
