Dry Day on 26 January Republic Day: January 26, 2024 is the 75th Republic Day of the country. This day is dry day in the entire country. In fact, dry day is observed on national festivals like Republic Day, Independence Day and birth anniversaries of some great men. There is no sale of liquor on this day in the entire country. Liquor shops are closed. Tomorrow i.e. 26th January is also a dry day due to Republic Day. Apart from liquor shops, liquor will also not be available in wine shops and hotels.
Carrying liquor on a dry day is also a crime. The
rules of the Excise Department say that one cannot carry liquor in the vehicle on a dry day. If you are caught carrying liquor in your vehicle on a dry day, you face legal action. Carrying liquor from another state into a state with prohibition can result in a fine of Rs 5,000 and up to 5 years in jail.
This much fine for drunk driving:
Even if you are caught drinking and driving, action will be taken. If someone is caught drinking and driving under Section 185 of the Motor Vehicle Act 1988, he will be tested and if more than 30 mg of alcohol is found in 100 ml of his blood, then action is taken against him. If you are caught driving under the influence of alcohol for the first time, you can face a fine of Rs 10,000 or 6 months in jail or both. If you are caught a second time, you may face a fine of Rs 15,000 and a jail term of up to 2 years. If caught for the third time, your driving license may be cancelled.
Ban on drinking alcohol in a parked vehicle?
The law does not make it a crime if you drink alcohol inside your home or in your car in a parking lot. But drinking alcohol in a vehicle in a public place is a legal offence. If you drink alcohol in your vehicle near a public place like road, bus stand, metro station, railway station, government office, you can face jail and fine.
