Instagram to Remove End-to-End Encryption on May 8

A major privacy shift is coming to your DMs. Specifically, Meta has confirmed that Instagram will stop supporting end-to-end encrypted (E2EE) messaging on May 8, 2026. Initially, this feature was an optional layer for extra security. Now, the company is pulling the plug. Consequently, if you use these “locked” chats, you must act fast to save your data.

Why Is the Feature Ending?

Look, Meta gives two main reasons for this move. Previously, only a “very small fraction” of users actually turned the feature on. Indeed, a Meta spokesperson told The Verge that low demand made it hard to keep. However, there is another side to the story. Actually, regulators and child safety groups have pressured Meta for years. They argue that encryption makes it harder to catch criminals. Therefore, removing it helps Instagram scan for illegal content more easily.

What You Need to Do Before May 8

If you have encrypted threads, they will not simply turn into “normal” chats. You might lose the media and history inside them. Specifically, follow these steps:

  1. Check for Alerts: Open Instagram and look for a pop-up about “Affected Chats.”

  2. Update Your App: Ensure you are on the latest version of Instagram. Older versions cannot download the data.

  3. Request Download: Go to Settings > Your Activity > Download Your Information. Select “Messages” to get a copy of your history.

  4. Save Media: Manually save any important photos or videos from your encrypted threads to your phone gallery.

The Privacy Trade-off

Who can read? Only you and the recipient. You, the recipient, and Meta’s servers.
Safety Scanning Technically impossible for Meta. Scannable for safety and policy.
Ads & AI Content is private. Content may be used for AI training.

Where to Go for Private Chats?

While Instagram is stepping back, Meta is not removing encryption everywhere. Specifically, WhatsApp will keep end-to-end encryption by default. Moreover, apps like Signal and Telegram (Secret Chats) remain the gold standard for privacy. Indeed, if your chats are highly sensitive, it is time to move them off Instagram.

In short, the “secret” part of Instagram is going away in less than two months. Next, I can provide the exact steps to move your most important contacts to Signal or WhatsApp. Right.
