iPhone 18 Pro Max Leaks: Under-Display Face ID, 2nm A20 Chip, and Variable Aperture

0

While the tech world is currently obsessed with the recent launch of the Galaxy S26 Ultra, the “Apple Rumor Mill” has already shifted focus to September 2026. On Monday, March 16, 2026, a flood of supply chain leaks has provided the most detailed look yet at the iPhone 18 Pro Max.

Apple appears ready to break its three-year design cycle, moving away from the prominent “Pill” cutout in favor of a cleaner, more futuristic aesthetic. Combined with a move to 2nm chip architecture, the iPhone 18 series aims to reclaim the performance crown while addressing the one area Apple has long played safe: the camera’s physical aperture

The Death of the Pill: Under-Display Face ID

The headline change for 2026 is the front-facing layout.

  • The Shrinking Island: By moving the Face ID sensors beneath the display, Apple can reduce the screen interruption to a simple hole-punch.

  • Layout Shift: Some prototypes suggest the selfie camera may move to the top-left, creating a vastly different visual profile from the centered cutouts used since the iPhone X.

  • Dynamic Island 2.0: The feature won’t die but will evolve into a smaller, less intrusive notification bar that sits closer to the top bezel.

A20 Pro: The 2nm Silicon Revolution

The iPhone 18 Pro series will be the debut vehicle for the A20 Pro chip.

  • World’s First 2nm: Manufactured by TSMC, this chip offers a 30% reduction in power consumption.

  • Unified Wafer: Apple is reportedly placing RAM directly on the same wafer as the CPU and GPU (System-on-Wafer), which significantly reduces heat and increases data transfer speeds for Apple Intelligence 3.0.

Variable Aperture: A Pro Camera Breakthrough

Following in the footsteps of Xiaomi and Huawei, Apple is finally rumored to bring a variable aperture to the Pro Max.

  • Mechanical Control: This allows the lens to physically open or close, controlling light and depth of field naturally rather than relying on software “Portrait Mode.”

  • Samsung Sensors: Reports suggest Apple may switch to a three-layer stacked sensor sourced from Samsung for the primary lens to reduce noise and increase readout speeds for 8K video.

Battery & Build: Bigger, Thicker, Heavier

Performance and camera upgrades come with a physical cost.

  • 5,100mAh: The Pro Max is expected to cross the 5,000mAh threshold for the first time.

  • Weight: Due to the massive battery and the new stainless steel/titanium hybrid frame, the device could weigh over 240 grams, making it one of the heaviest flagships on the market.

Reality Check

The shift to Under-Display Face ID has been “rumored” for years. Still, 2026 is the first time supply chain yields for under-panel sensors have met Apple’s strict quality standards. Therefore, while we should be optimistic, there is a chance Apple limits the “Full Hole-Punch” design to the 18 Pro Max, leaving the standard 18 Pro with a refined Dynamic Island. In fact, the 240g weight is a serious concern; it would make the phone noticeably heavier than the already-hefty S26 Ultra.

The Loopholes

Apple says the iPhone is getting “thinner.” In fact, this is a “Packaging Loophole”—while the internal components (like the chip) are getting thinner due to 2nm tech, the phone itself is getting thicker to accommodate the larger battery. Therefore, the “thinner” marketing will likely refer to the display bezels rather than the chassis. Still, the “C2 Modem Loophole” remains; by using their own modem, Apple can claim “better battery life,” but users might find that early in-house modems struggle with specific global carrier bands compared to the battle-tested Qualcomm chips.

What This Means for You

If you are an iPhone 16 or 17 user, the iPhone 18 Pro Max is the first “True Redesign” since 2022. First, realize that the under-display Face ID will make the screen feel significantly larger. Then, if you are a mobile photographer, understand that variable aperture is a bigger deal than megapixels, as it gives you true control over your shots.

Finally, understand that 2nm is a generational leap. You should expect a phone that doesn’t just run faster but stays much cooler during intense tasks like AI-video generation. Before you trade in your current phone, wait for the June WWDC26 event, where Apple will likely preview the AI features that will be exclusive to the A20 Pro chip.

What’s Next

Expect CAD renders to leak by May 2026, confirming the final button placements and camera bump size. Then, look for iOS 20 beta code to reveal hints about the new “Hole-Punch” UI interactions. Finally, expect Apple to begin trial production in India by July 2026, as the country continues to grow as a primary manufacturing hub for the Pro series.
