iPhone 18 Pro Leaks: Under-Display Face ID to Replace Dynamic Island in 2026

0

Apple is reportedly prepping for its biggest display shake-up since the notch died. As of Friday, January 16, 2026, the supply chain is buzzing about the iPhone 18 Pro series, which is currently in sample production and set for a September launch.1

The thing is, the “Dynamic Island” that we’ve lived with since the iPhone 14 Pro might be getting an eviction notice. Or nothing. Let’s be real, the goal has always been a “total screen” experience. Those too. According to leaks from Digital Chat Station, Apple is testing LTPO OLED panels that move the Face ID sensors entirely under the display.2

The “iPhone 18 Pro” Log: Field Notes

It’s an ongoing situation where Apple is splitting its lineup like never before.

  • The Punch-Hole Shift: While Face ID goes “stealth” under the glass, the selfie camera is reportedly staying visible.3 The thing is, it might move to the top-left corner. And here’s the kicker—this would mean the end of the centered “pill” design we’ve seen for years.

  • The Launch Split: This is the messy part. Rumors say the iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max, and the new iPhone Fold will drop in September 2026.4 The thing is, the standard iPhone 18 and iPhone Air 2 might be held back until early 2027.5 Those too.

  • A20 “2nm” Power: The Pro models are expected to debut the A20 Pro chip, built on a tiny 2nm process.6 The thing is, this makes the phone faster but also way more energy-efficient, which is good because these under-display sensors are power-hungry.

  • The “Coffee” Color: Apple is reportedly testing three new shades for the Pro line: Burgundy, Purple, and “Coffee. The thing is, they might be ditching the two-tone look for a more seamless, single-color finish.7

iPhone 18 Series: The 2026 Roadmap

Model Display Tech Key Hardware Est. Launch
iPhone 18 Pro 6.27″ Under-display Face ID A20 Pro (2nm) Sept 2026
iPhone 18 Pro Max 6.86″ Under-display Face ID A20 Pro (2nm) Sept 2026
iPhone Fold 7.8″ Foldable LTPO A20 Chip Sept 2026
iPhone 18 (Base) 6.27″ Dynamic Island A20 Chip March 2027
iPhone Air 2 6.55″ Ultra-thin Design A20 Chip March 2027

And Here’s the Kicker…

The under-display Face ID is actually a stepping stone. The thing is, Apple is aiming for the iPhone 20 (2027) to be the first “Perfect Screen”—no holes, no islands, just 100% glass.8 Those too.

It’s an ongoing situation where the iPhone Fold is the wildcard. Leaks suggest it will use a “book-style” opening and cost somewhere between 2,000 and 2,500.9 The thing is, if you want the first foldable Apple phone, you’re going to need a very deep wallet.
