The deadline to file Income Tax Return (ITR) is just a few weeks away. Tax professionals and individuals have started trying to file ITR before July 31, 2023. But, due to a technical glitch, there is a problem in filing the return. To make tax return filing easier, information about advance payment of tax by the Income Tax Department, tax deducted by the employer, bank, tenant or any other institution has been given in the income tax return. Pre-filing technique has been used for this. The taxpayer only needs to check the information already filled in the ITR form once. If there is no information in the form, it is necessary to fill that information.

Many details are missing

However, many important details are missing in the tax return forms. Karan Batra, co-founder of CharteredClub.com, said, “Advance tax information is not given in Form 26AS. Due to this, software utilities are not able to provide data of advance tax payment on the tax website of Income Tax Department.” Chartered accountants say that this is making it difficult to file ITR. A Chartered Accountant from Gurgaon said that earlier we used to see the tax statement and we used to get the details even before the taxpayers told us. Now we have to seek details from taxpayers. After that he has to fill in the form.

41 lakh returns filed so far

The chartered accountant said that many times the clients are not aware of this. So we have to tell them and wait till they give the information. The pre-fetched data is not showing properly in the form. Batra said that in one case, the advance tax paid in the financial year 2022-23 was merged with the current financial year in Form 26AS. So far 41.6 lakh income tax returns have been filed for the financial year 2022-23.

Some utilities not released

Some chartered accountants said that they have not yet started the process of return filing, as they faced difficulty in starting the process early last year. Last year 6.73 crore income tax returns were filed. A partner at a Mumbai-based tax advisory firm said that often there is data missing in Form 26AS. Even after the release of income tax return forms in April 2023, the software utilities have not been released.

Many chartered accountants complained about the problem

In June 2021, a big change was seen in the Income Tax Portal. Many types of problems were seen then. Moneycontrol spoke to several chartered accountants, some of whom said they were facing difficulties in getting data on tax paid.
