LPG Subsidy: Modi government made LPG refill cheaper for the beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana and general consumers. After the Central Government’s decision to increase the subsidy amount on LPG cylinders, there is a record increase in the demand for LPG cylinders in the country.

On August 29, 2023, Modi Cabinet made LPG cylinders cheaper by Rs 200 for general and beneficiaries of PM Ujjwala Yojana. After this decision of the government, the average number of LPG cylinders refilled daily in the month of September crossed 11 lakh.

In October 2023, LPG was made even cheaper by Rs 100 for the beneficiaries of PM Ujjwala Yojana. After which, after the demand for LPG gas increased in October, refill of 10.3 cylinders was seen daily. And it is believed that there may be further increase in the number of LPG cylinder refills.

Just before the assembly elections in five states, the Modi government at the Center reduced the prices of LPG cylinders. Beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana are getting LPG cylinder 500 rupees cheaper i.e. at 600 rupees. Rest of the LPG customers have to pay Rs 900 for refilling their LPG cylinder, whereas earlier they had to pay Rs 1100.

Not only the central government but many states have also made LPG cylinders cheaper in their states. The Congress government of Rajasthan is providing cylinders for only Rs 500 to the beneficiaries of PM Ujjwala Scheme.

Yogi government of Uttar Pradesh has announced to give free cylinders to the beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana on the occasion of Diwali. Shivraj government of Madhya Pradesh has also promised to provide cylinders for Rs 450. In its election manifesto, Congress has promised to provide LPG cylinder for Rs 500 in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh.

On May 1, 2016, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana to provide free LPG connections with the aim of getting rid of smoke. There are a total of more than 9.59 crore active beneficiaries of this scheme. More than seven years after the launch of the scheme, the number of people taking advantage of the scheme had decreased due to the huge increase in the prices of LPG cylinders.

According to the government data, the beneficiaries of PM Ujjwala were not getting their cylinders refilled due to expensive LPG. In 2022, the government told the Parliament that in the last five years, 4.13 crore beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana have not refilled even a single LPG cylinder. There are a total of 7.67 crore beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana who had refilled only one LPG cylinder.
