Moving away from legacy text-based status bars, the visual notification integrates directly into profile photos while respecting existing user privacy controls.

MENLO PARK — Meta-owned messaging giant WhatsApp has officially begun deploying a new visual indicator for active users, rolling out a distinct green dot to signal online availability to selected iOS beta participants.

According to tracking documentation from WABetaInfo, the interface modification follows a preliminary deployment phase for Android beta testers last month. The updated UI layout is now populating for eligible Apple ecosystem users running the latest TestFlight beta iterations, alongside a highly restricted group of standard App Store build testers.

1. Feature Mechanics and Screen Placement

The green dot serves as a live, glanceable replacement for legacy text indicators. However, its implementation remains targeted rather than global across the application layout:

  • Primary Location: The indicator populates exclusively on a contact’s profile photograph inside the Chat Information Screen (accessible by tapping a contact’s display name at the top of an open thread).

  • Legacy Text Replacement: It occupies the space previously used for the sub-text status display located beneath the primary user icon.

  • Real-Time Syncing: The green dot updates programmatically, vanishing instantly the moment a contact closes the application or switches to background activity.

  • Current Interface Limitations: The indicator does not currently display in the primary chat history list or within the active, dual-window conversation feed.

2. Privacy Integration & Core User Control

The visual overhaul does not override WhatsApp’s foundational privacy framework. The green dot complies strictly with established account restrictions configured by the individual user.

Online Visibility Validation Loop:
├── Contact triggers WhatsApp active session
├── System checks core account settings
│ ├── Last Seen & Online Status = Hidden ──> Green dot is BLOCKED/Disabled
│ └── Last Seen & Online Status = Public ──> Green dot populates in real time
└── Dynamic update terminates upon session close

This ensures that users who value anonymity retain absolute control over their platform activity data, preventing third parties from tracking usage habits without prior consent.

3. Foundation for an Upcoming ‘Contacts Hub’

Automotive and software industry technical analysts suggest that the green dot rollout functions as the foundational framework for a comprehensive Contacts Hub currently in development for both Android and iOS environments.

The planned dedicated hub is expected to centralize communication workflows by creating an independent section inside the directory architecture. This space will explicitly highlight which network contacts are currently online or were active in preceding hours, streamlining messaging efficiency.

Meta has yet to publish an official timeline detailing when the visual asset will migrate out of beta testing into a stable, global production build for all mainstream users.
