Delhi Freezes at 4.6°C: Coldest Morning of 2026 as Winter Rain Hits NCR

0

Delhi just hit a new low, literally. As of Friday, January 9, 2026, the capital recorded its coldest morning of the season so far, with the mercury crashing to 4.6°C at the Safdarjung base station.

The thing is, the cold didn’t come alone. Early morning rain lashed parts of Delhi, Noida, and Gurugram around 6:00 AM, turning the “dry chill” into a bone-deep “wet freeze.” Or nothing. Let’s be real, while the rain usually clears the air, the AQI is still stubbornly stuck in the “Very Poor” category. Those too.

The “Freeze & Drizzle” Log: Field Notes

It’s an ongoing situation where the combination of fog and rain has basically paralyzed the morning commute.

  • The Record: That 4.6°C reading is about 2.3 degrees below normal. It’s the lowest we’ve seen all winter.

  • The Rain: It wasn’t just a drizzle. Areas like Ayanagar saw 0.8 mm of rain, while Safdarjung and Lodhi Road reported “trace” rainfall.

  • The Visibility: Dense fog is back with a vengeance. Visibility dropped to near zero in some pockets, prompting Air India and other airlines to issue travel advisories.

  • The School Situation: All Delhi schools (government and private) are officially closed until January 15, 2026. Some parents are complaining that certain private schools are trying to hold “special classes,” but the DoE hasn’t budged.

Winter Stats: Delhi-NCR (Jan 9, 2026)

[Table: Today’s Temperature & AQI Check]

Location Min Temp Max Temp (Exp) Current AQI
Safdarjung 4.6°C 17.5°C 325 (Very Poor)
Ayanagar 4.8°C 17.0°C 299 (Poor)
Anand Vihar 5.2°C 16.5°C 388 (Near Severe)
Noida 8.0°C 16.0°C 370 (Very Poor)
Gurugram 6.0°C 15.0°C 385 (Very Poor)

And Here’s the Kicker…

The “rain-clean” effect we usually hope for didn’t happen today. The thing is, the humidity from the rain actually helped trap the pollutants closer to the ground. Anand Vihar and Nehru Nagar are still gasping at AQI levels near 400.

The IMD says the next three days will see “Mainly Clear Skies” but with shallow to moderate fog during the morning. The “Cold Day” streak is likely to continue because the maximum temperature isn’t expected to cross 18°C. It’s an ongoing situation where the sun is just a faint yellow smudge in the sky for most of the day.
