Round Dates (Tentative)
Round 6 June 15 – June 17, 2026
Round 7 June 22 – June 24, 2026
Round 8 June 29 – July 01, 2026
Round 9 July 06 – July 08, 2026

Understanding Your Options

  • Accept & Freeze: You accept the offer and will not be considered for any other offers in subsequent rounds.

  • Retain & Wait: You “hold” this offer but want to be considered for higher preferences in the next round. Note: You can only “Retain” a specific offer twice.

  • Reject & Wait: You do not want this offer and wish to wait for other offers in the next round.

Reality Check

A major trap for students is forgetting that registration on COAP does not count as an application to an IIT. You must visit the individual websites of IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, etc., and apply there first. Only after you apply to the college will their offer appear on your COAP dashboard.

The Loopholes

IIT Roorkee uses a “Three-Year Score Validity” rule. In fact, this is a “Merit Loophole”—if your GATE 2024 score was significantly higher than your 2026 score, you should register using the 2024 credentials to secure a better seat. Still, the “NPCIL Loophole” remains; as a PSU, NPCIL uses this portal for recruitment. If you receive a job offer there, accepting it on COAP usually means you cannot accept an M.Tech seat in the same round, forcing a career-vs-education decision instantly.

What This Means for You

  • Registration: Keep your GATE registration number and scorecards from 2024–2026 ready. Registration on coap2026.iitr.ac.in typically opens shortly after the GATE results are finalized.

  • The “Retain” Limit: Be strategic. If you use “Retain & Wait” on the same offer for two consecutive rounds, you must either Accept or Reject it in the third round.

  • PSU Aspirants: If you are aiming for NPCIL, keep your COAP login active daily during the May/June window, as PSU offers often have shorter response times.

What’s Next

Expect individual IIT M.Tech application portals to open by the last week of March 2026. Then, look for the official GATE 2026 scorecard download on the GOAPS portal (usually available around March 27). Finally, look out for the CCMT 2026 notification (for NIT and IIIT admissions), which follows a similar but separate schedule.
