Modi government, on 2nd October 2014, launched the “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan”- India’s most extensive cleanliness drive. This flagship cleanliness campaign aimed at cleaning the infrastructure and roads of India’s villages, towns and cities and make India ODF (open defecation free) by 2019. In order to further promote the mission, the government has planned to rope in university/college students and offer them “Swachh Bharat summer internship” where these students can work for the campaign. This announcement was made by PM Modi in the 43rd edition of Mann ki Baat – his monthly radio broadcast.

The official internship website mentions that the internship aims to not only develop the orientation and skills of youth for sanitation related work, but also give them a chance to work for the campaign. In rural areas, this will integrate the youth in community development work in the run-up to Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary.

Following ministries will offer this 100 hours of Swachhata internship during May 1 and July 31:

  1. Ministry of Human Resource Development
  2. Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports
  3. Ministry of Drinking Water & Sanitation

Interns producing excellent results will not only be awarded with a cash prize but will also be recognized at the national level. In order to be eligible for winning the prize, the candidate has to adopt a village and diligently work towards improving rural sanitation condition in India. After completing 15 days of fieldwork, the candidates have to submit a report on the portal of Swachh Bharat Summer Internship. The candidates will be assigned a supervisor who will help him/her and guide them as per the guidelines throughout the period of internship.
