After conquering the mobile carrier industry, reliance is now set to take on new challenges to keep up with its staggering growth; The Ambanis have now targeted the feature phone market as a potential profit-making alternative. With the launch of JioPhone 2, this statement was made more explicit.

We might see small feature phone makers packing their bags and leaving India as Jio looks to disrupt the market with its 2,999 phone which brings never before seen tech on a feature phone. Does that seem tempting?

The Ambani’s dropped a bombshell on the same day, and you can now own a JioPhone 2 for just 501 Rupees if you trade in your old JioPhone.

Now let’s get down to the nitty-gritty:

The JioPhone 2 features a full qwerty keypad with an integrated voice assistant and NFC. Its runs on KAI OS and now features 512 MB ram and four gigs of internal storage. Plenty to keep a feature phone ticking right?

It comes with VOLTE and GPS. It is equipped with front and back cameras. The 2.4-inch display is backed up by a 2000Mah cell which is more than enough to keep it running throughout the day.

The primary sim slot will be locked for the Jio sim, while the secondary sim slot can be paired up with any carrier.

JioPhone 2 will natively support applications like Facebook, YouTube, and WhatsApp so that you don’t miss out on all the social media.

As of today, a new update will enable google maps on the Jio phone which will add to the feature list to JioPhone 2.

The Monsoon Hungama offer

The monsoon Hungama offer will please the more than 25 million users of the 1st Jio phone. Old JioPhone users can trade in their phones and get the brand new JioPhone 2 for just 501 Rupees.

As announced by Mukesh Ambani old users will be able to trade in their phone from July 21 onwards. This offer will result in a substantial amount of sales of the new phone.

The monsoon Hungama is set to further drive feature phone manufacturers like Nokia, Samsung, and other small phone manufacturers out of the country fearing sales drops. JioPhone currently leads the feature phone segment with a market share of 35% followed by Samsung and Nokia.

Network and Data plans for JioPhone 2

Apart from the regular Jio plans, which are adored by the Indian youth. The JioPhone will get special treats from the network provider.

Mukesh Ambani specifically quoted the “500 million feature phone users,” and he talked about the lack of internet access to them.

The phone is targeted explicitly at these users who will benefit directly from getting the Jio phone.

Currently, there are two exclusive plans for the JioPhone

  •    The rs49 plan which provides 1GB of data for 28 days, which is more than enough to use messaging apps.
  •    Rs153, plan which offers 42GB of data for 28 days, for users who like to use JioTV and other content consumption apps.

Pricing

Apart from the Monsoon Hungama, normal user’s will be able to get a JioPhone 2 from August 15 for an introductory price of 2,999 Rupees.

There is no compelling zero price offer for the JioPhone 2 like the old JioPhone. The price is justified by the unique features and aggressive tariff plans than no other feature phone user will have.

The Technology behind the JioPhone 2

While most of the internal hardware remain undisclosed apart from the number on ram, storage, and battery, KaiOS handles the software side.

KaiOS platform is also used in all the of the throwback Nokia feature phones. This will mean global software support as well as a promise that the platform will not die anytime soon.

The versatile operating system is gathering support from developer communities and as the commercial viability increase software providers will try to integrate their native app with the platform.

The platform is optimized to work on non-touch phones specifically. It has a build in app store with a growing app collection, but for the JioPhone the Jio Store will handle that part.

The platform supports 4G, NFC, Wi-Fi, GPS and HTML 5 open standard.

Although updates will be dependent on carriers, we will see regular updates for the software as the company behind the platform has committed software support for phones running the OS.

Availability and Variants

Although the phone is said to roll out on August 15, Jio has not mentioned any retail partners nor collaboration with any e-commerce platforms. Users can get the phone from Jio outlets.

As far as color combos go, you can get the phone in only one color- BLACK.

Because of the enormous demand, the limited initial stock is expected to be depleted in the first few weeks.

Jio’s rise to power.

Jio started its commercial operations on July 1.

Since then there has been no looking back as the carrier’s aggressive data packs attracted millions of smartphone users to change their carrier networks.

The profit margins of all the competition dropped significantly, and they are let fight it out in a highly competitive market.

The growth factor is immense, but it comes as no surprise. Jio has invested Rs 2,50,000 crores in digital infrastructure and fiber optics technology. With this technology backing, Jio now has 215 million users and plans to reach the 500 million mark within the 2years.

Jio’s marketing team has been going all out for promotions, and it is even targeting remote villages as it tries to bring internet to the masses.

With the scale of operations and the ambitions that Mr. Ambani has, the road ahead looks pretty bad for its competitors in India. Along with the JioPhone 2, it also introduced the Jio GigaFiber wireless broadband tech and a set-top box.

So with that Jio will have its feet firmly planted in the broadband as well home entertainment industry.

There is a certain amount of tensions among the competitors as their shares fell rapidly after Ambani’s announcement.
