Indian Army Overhauls Uniform Code to Strip Colonial Vestiges

The Indian Army has executed a sweeping overhaul of its dress regulations, systematically removing legacy customs inherited from the British Raj. Detailed in the newly published Army Uniforms-2026 Pamphlet, these statutory changes aim to align military traditions with India’s evolving national identity and sovereign ethos, while balancing modern functionality.

Key Changes in Dress Code and Ceremonial Protocol

The new manual introduces distinct changes to both ceremonial attire and day-to-day military bearing, emphasizing indigenization.

1. Introduction of the “Bandi” Jacket

To bring an indigenous element into formal civil interactions, the Army has introduced the closed-neck Bandi jacket. It is authorized as formal civil attire for officers, worn over a full-sleeved shirt with matching formal trousers and closed footwear.

2. De-linking Colonial Accoutrements

  • Pouch Belts Removed: The traditional pouch belt has been entirely deleted from Mess Dress Nos. 5 and 6.

  • Abolition of “Royal”: The force has completely dropped archaic terminology like “Royal” from all remaining institutional contexts and dress descriptions.

  • New Winter Outerwear: The Army has reintroduced a functional Battle Jacket as the standard winter outerwear for all ranks. This will phase out the existing jersey-based winter uniform (Dress 3A) by June 2029, following a three-year transition window.

3. Restructured Sword Protocols

The mandatory carriage of swords has been heavily restricted to preserve functional dignity:

  • Reviewing Officers: The carriage of swords by Reviewing Officers during parades is now strictly optional, with the manual specifying that Reviewing Officers will generally not carry swords on parade.

  • Authorized Personnel: Swords are now confined to parade commanders, contingent commanders, and designated units during primary national events (e.g., Republic Day, Independence Day, Army Day, and Guards of Honour).

Code of Conduct & Personal Appearance Regulations

The 2026 manual enforces stringent discipline regarding personal appearance and uniform sanctity.

Prohibited in Uniform: Radical hairstyles, unauthorized beards, visible electronic gadgets, tattoos, body piercings, and cosmetic makeup are strictly barred.

Furthermore, personnel are strictly prohibited from wearing the military uniform at unauthorized political gatherings, religious events, protests, weddings, private parties, or paid media appearances.

Broad Decolonization Drive: Renaming 246 Military Assets

This uniform update follows a massive institutional initiative earlier this year to eradicate colonial-era nomenclature by renaming 246 roads, buildings, colonies, and facilities across various cantonments. The renamings honor India’s own gallantry awardees, war heroes, and eminent military leaders:

Cantonment / Station Old British-Era Name New Indian Name Honoring / Significance
Delhi Cantonment Kirby Place Kenuguruse Vihar Captain Neikezhakuo Kenguruse, MVC
Delhi Cantonment Mall Road Arun Khetrapal Marg Second Lieutenant Arun Khetrapal, PVC
Ambala Cantonment Patterson Road Quarters Dhan Singh Thapa Enclave Major Dhan Singh Thapa, PVC
Mathura Cantonment New Horn Line Abdul Hamid Lines Company Quartermaster Havildar Abdul Hamid, PVC
Jaipur Cantonment Queens Line Road Sundar Singh Marg Subedar Sundar Singh, AC
Bareilly Cantonment New Birdwood Line Thimayya Colony General K.S. Thimayya

IMA Dehradun Colins & Kingsway Blocks Nubra & Kargil Blocks Historic battles and local operations
Kolkata Fort William Vijay Durg Victory Fortification
Zakhama Station Spear Lake Marg Hangpan Dada Marg Havildar Hangpan Dada, AC

This structural pivot follows an earlier directive on February 24, 2023, which discontinued other legacy practices including the use of horse-driven buggies at official functions, ceremonial “pull-out” events during retirements, and pipe bands during formal dinners.
